The Assistant Director, Annual Giving (level 12) seeks to introduce new constituent groups to the impact that they can make with philanthropic support of the Fuqua School of Business.

The Assistant Director will focus expanding Fuqua’s donor base by building unrestricted support for the school among the school’s recent graduates, parents of current students, and other special consituencies.

The Assistant Director reports to the Senior Associate Director, Annual Giving and Communications and collaborates with the Development and Alumni Relations team and other Fuqua and Duke University departments on overall strategy and initiatives.

Job Duties

  • Design and manage a recent graduate philanthropy program, including education, relationship building, solicitation of gifts or pledges from recent graduates, pledge fulfillment, and stewardship.
  • Manage efforts to engage recent graduates in philanthropic support of the school from graduation to their five-year reunion.

This may include developing targeted communications, managing volunteers, conducting one-to-one outreach, or organizing events.

  • Design and manage a parent philanthropy program, including education, relationship building, solicitation of gifts or pledges from parents of Fuqua students or recent graduates, pledge fulfillment, and stewardship.
  • Build and maintain relationships with student leaders and influencers to understand the student experience, class culture, and attitudes toward philanthropy among students.
  • Provide education about the role that the Fuqua Annual Fund plays in supporting the school and the student experience for both student and parent constituents.
  • Coordinate with Fuqua’s frontline fundraisers to identify recent graduate and parent prospects who have high potential to support the Fuqua Annual Fund for targeted outreach.
  • Work with Fuqua’s Annual Giving team to set dollar amount and participation goals for recent graduate and parent philanthropy initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Fuqua’s alumni communications team to create and execute print and electronic solicitations as needed. Work with outside vendors to manage production and fulfillment as necessary.
  • Train and offer ongoing support of volunteers who participate in special constituent philanthropy campaigns.
  • Provide support for gift logistics, including recurring giving; reviewing and rectifying credit card or check failures;

supporting efforts for donors to apply for corporate matching; and answering donors’ questions about their giving history as needed.

  • Conduct 1 : 1 outreach to prospective recent graduates and parent donors to secure Annual Fund gifts and pledge payments at critical points in the solicitation cycle.
  • Work with Executive Director, Annual Giving and Communications and Senior Associate Director, Annual Giving and Communications to analyze results and identify trends in recent graudate and parent donor behavior to refine Fuqua’s ongoing Annual Fund solicitation and stewardship strategies.
  • Partner with the Senior Director, Advancement Services to create mailing lists and manage data.
  • Provide support for Development and Alumni Relations events and programs as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • An understanding of institutional fundraising and experience in development, alumni relations, or higher education.
  • Successful volunteer management experience, including identifying, cultivating, training and stewarding individuals.
  • Three to five years’ successful project management experience, including meeting numerous deadlines and objectives and managing multiple concurrent projects with limited resources.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Access, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint,) and willingness and ability to master a proprietary SAP database tool.
  • Refined written and oral communication and customer service skills.
  • Exceptional ability to think strategically and analytically.
  • Detail orientation, flexibility, and ability to work independently and in a fast-paced, results-oriented team environment.
  • Creativity, adaptability, diplomatic skills and sense of humor.
  • Familiarity and comfort with social media channels preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires one year of experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fundraising, sales and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer and coordinate annual fund solicitations and other special fundraising activities.

A bachelor's degree from Duke University may be substituted for the required year of experience since the familiarity with the University and contacts with current students and recent graduates would be directly relevant to the job or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
