Assistant Director, Academic, Graduate Advising & Student Success

Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedAssistant Director, Academic, Graduate Advising & Student Successat its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties) :

Administration and Leadership

Serve as graduate academic advisor for Mike Ilitch School of Business graduate students.

Manage advising appointment policies and systems, with special attention to access, modality, and availability.

Develop annual communication strategies for appointment policies and scheduling systems.

Serve as contact person for advising staff.

Assess and evaluate advising technological needs, including upgrades and advancements.

Establish processes and best practices.

Implement strategic vision of school and university administration to positively drive graduate student retention.

Serve as liaison to various university departments including Records & Registration, Office of International Students and Scholars and Financial Aid.

Represent the school and office at meetings, events, and other activities.

Coordinate graduate events and new student orientation in fall and winter semesters.

Supervision

Provide end-to-end supervision of graduate advising staff.

Coordinate work schedules and vacation / leave requests for staff.

Communicate goals with advising staff and lead implementation.

Oversee performance management process with direct reports, including the planning, coaching, and review of individual performances.

Engage direct reports in development and growth opportunities.

Inform direct reports of new policies and procedures as they relate to internal and external advancements in graduate advancement.

Train new and current staff on academic program criteria, and program requirements.

Operational Improvements

In conjunction with the assistant dean of graduate programs and enrollment management, develop and implement a comprehensive improvement strategy to advanc e department goals.

Identify, prioritize, suggest, and implement projects to reduce costs and increase productivity.

Lead projects and provide individual contributions after strategic projects are identified.

Promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Assess existing policies and procedures.

Utilize data-driven insights to identify trends and potential issues.

Leadership

Assist in short- and long-term planning efforts.

Respond to difficult student cases, as well as inquiries from faculty members, advisors, and administration staff.

Provide top-notch service to current and prospective graduate students, faculty, school leadership team, and administrators.

Positively advance dive rsity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree with a minimum 5 years of job-related experience.

Capable of independent decision making and judgement.

Holds advanced understanding of advising, student support methods, and recruitment.

Possesses the ability to multitask and creatively problem solve.

Retains the ability to work independently and take ownership of projects until completion.

Capable of networking and building relationships with stakeholders.

Has the ability to manage and complete projects and other assigned duties.

Proficient with MS Office products and have exceptional knowledge of Word and Excel.

Have excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Able to prioritize and organize work so that goals are met in a timely manner.

Capable of utilizing advising and institutional systems.

Able to generate suggestions for improving work and meeting challenges with resourcefulness.

Able to follow through on commitments, follow instructions, and exhibit objectivity and openness to other's views.

Able to work with faculty and administrators to oversee securing, creating, and maintaining deliverables associated with advising graduate business students.
