Job Description Summary

The Department of Art at Wake Forest University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position as Assistant Teaching Professor of Drawing, to begin July 1, 2025.

We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar with an MFA in art, a strong track record in both teaching and creative work, and the professional background to teach all levels of drawing in a Studio Art BA program.

A successful candidate will be expected to teach all levels of drawing, including Figure Drawing, and potentially develop a First Year Seminar.

Additionally, the candidate should demonstrate a commitment to service, mentoring, and advising students from diverse backgrounds, as well as shaping the future of the program through leadership roles and curriculum development.

The teaching load is 3 / 3 with the opportunity for course reduction based on service contributions and awards. The initial term of appointment is two years, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance.

The position offers a market competitive package of compensation and benefits based on rank and experience. The salary range for this position is $56,000-$62,000;

the salary will be determined in keeping with the candidate's qualifications and experience.

Job Description :

Candidates should demonstrate an expansive approach to drawing, with the potential for interdisciplinary connections both within Wake Forest and the wider Winston-Salem community.

This role involves teaching primarily all levels of drawing as well as Introduction to Art and Design, with the possibility of additional courses based on need and expertise.

We are particularly interested in applicants whose practice or teaching integrates digital technologies and / or emphasizes ecological and environmental art.

Candidates with a demonstrated understanding of environmental art practices, and the ability to incorporate environmental issues and sustainability into their courses, will be especially considered.

Other responsibilities include committee work, representing the department at student and recruitment events, and student advising.

QUALIFICATIONS

An MFA is required at the time of appointment. Applicants should have a record of at least three years of university-level teaching experience.

We seek an educator with strong organizational skills and who demonstrates an understanding of historical and contemporary art issues, methods, and technologies;

this should be evident in both their personal work and that of their students. Students in our fundamentals courses explore elements and principles of design through a variety of technological and material-based approaches.

As such, candidates who show a commitment to innovative combinations of digital and analog art-making tools in their lesson planning will be preferred.

Fluency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is essential, and experience with digital printing, laser cutting, and additional visual art software is desirable.

The successful candidate will also be well-versed in color theory core drawing principles and techniques. Evidence of teaching experience across a diverse range of media, including both digital and physical media should be highlighted in the candidate's student art examples.
