Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :

Established in 1985 by Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise is a nonpartisan business policy think tank affiliated with the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The nonprofit institute and its affiliated centers convene leaders from the private sector, academic community and government to build a greater understanding of how entrepreneurship, economic development and global commerce can work for the public good. The institute leverages best-in-class research to develop market-based solutions to today’s most complex economic challenges. In doing so, the institute aims to support businesses and policies that better the lives of people in North Carolina, across the country and around the world.

Position Summary :

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise seeks Senior Economic Research Analyst to provide research support on academic and translational research projects in collaborations with Kenan-Flagler Faculty, the institute’s Chief Economist, and Kenan Institute staff. In particular, this position will work on several institute-led research projects such as the development and build out of a set of high frequency proprietary regional economic indicators using mixed frequency data as well as topics broadly related to macroeconomics, labor economics, capital formation, economic prosperity, among others. This position will also support the creation of the institute’s content development.

Specific job duties include :

  • Identify, organize, and clean data for analysis using statistical software such as Stata, SAS, R, and Python among

others

  • Perform economic, financial, econometric, and statistical analyses.
  • Write and maintain documentation of data sources and statistical tests performed on the data.
  • Conduct literature reviews on a broad set of economic and business topics in support of development of research
  • papers, white papers, and reports.

  • Support development, maintenance, communication, and dissemination of proprietary regional economic indicators.
  • Write data commentaries based on current economic data that will be shared on the Institute’s website.
  • Opportunity to work closely with Kenan-Faculty faculty and potential to co-author research papers.
  • Support the development and implementation of research seminars and webinars.
  • Cultivate relationships with Kenan-Flagler faculty in order to stay apprised of their latest research and develop a
  • deep understanding of their areas of expertise.

  • Train and onboard new research analysts on our process and methods for econometric models that support the
  • American Growth Project.

  • Serve as the first point of contact for junior research analysts who need feedback or support troubleshooting issues
  • related to our economic models.

  • Manage our current modeling processes for the American Growth Project, including updating and maintaining the
  • models for regional GDP Growth and Productivity.

  • Lead the process for developing new models for other economic indicators, such as developing a manufacturing
  • health index, with oversight from the Institute’s Chief Economist.

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

    Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

    Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

    Bachelor’s degree in economics, business, public policy, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Must have at least one year experience using programming languages R or python; and must be proficient using statistical software Stata.

    Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

    2-5 years of relevant work experience or a master’s degree preferred.

    Additional preferred qualifications include :

  • Strong econometric modeling and analytical skills
  • 2-5 years of experience programming with Python or R in a research setting preferred.
  • Strong writing and communication skills :
  • Experience with spreadsheet / presentation software, including preparing summary charts, graphs, and tables.
