Job Summary

The Student Services Specialist conducts student reception and intake for the Center, including assessing students' needs and providing information on services and processes.

This position provides academic and career advisement for new, continuing, and prospective students. Academic advisement includes providing information on admissions, registration, program and degree requirements, education plans, and information on MCCCD policies and procedures.

Career advisement includes providing career information and career assessments, and making referrals to other student services based on the students' needs.

The Student Services Specialist also manages a wide variety of information sources such as web sites, printed material, and email, to maintain current knowledge of advising policies.

This position facilitates group advising including presentation of information and registration.

To best serve the students, department, and college, this position requires a physical presence on campus.

Essential Functions

60% - Conducts student reception and intake for the Center including assessing student's needs and

providing information on services and processes. Directs students on the proper steps to take to complete

processes. Makes referrals to other student services. Signs students in to meet with an advisor and provides

customer service to students.

20% - Advises students on academic requirements, education, and career planning.

20% - Answers the department phone line and replies to phone messages. Provides advisement to students

via the phone. Takes advisor call back requests and routes to advisors. Monitors the schedule of the front

desk and makes adjustments to ensure coverage and consistent service.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, or related student development programs.

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A. A Bachelor's degree

B. Two (2) or more years' experience in student services at a college or university

C. Experience in front line customer service

D. Two (2) or more years' experience in career and / or academic advisement

E. Experience in advisement theory and practice

F. Effective written & communication skills as demonstrated by cover letter and resume

Special Working Conditions

May be required to work evenings and weekends.

May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs.

This position requires a physical presence on campus with possible partial remote work depending on business needs to best serve the students, department, and college.

This position is scheduled to start August 2024.
