Amazon is looking to hire an experienced engineering leader to manage and grow a team working on the core components of Amazon Linux.

As an SDM, you will own key parts of the software stack that is running on most Amazon servers worldwide, guiding a team of engineers collaborating with internal teams and the Open Source community.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Manager within EC2, you will lead a team of highly skilled developers and have strategic impact on the business.

Our roadmap is bursting with opportunity for you to lead this team in solving intriguing challenges and tangibly impacting the customer experience.

In this key role you will be responsible for developing and maintaining key components of Amazon Linux, such as base libraries, core utilities, and language runtimes.

You'll also have responsibilities with internal customers and supervise and support their use of Amazon Linux. If you have passion for people management, solid technical knowledge and want to build solutions to challenging problems that directly affect millions of people, there may be no better place than Amazon for you to impact the world! You will manage your team to execute against project plans and delivery commitments.

You will translate customer requirements into project and engineering plans, with ambitious but realistic schedules. You represent your team in calls and meetings to report on progress and update project plans if required.

Long term you evolve your team’s software engineering methods and implement best practices. Ultimately you contribute to the organization’s hiring to grow your team and others.

A day in the life

A typical day will have multiple meetings with team members and stakeholders to review and discuss their work, priorities, and professional development.

For planning and technical designs, you will write, read or review narrative documents and iterate on them. When hiring, you will review profiles and conduct interviews.

About the team

Amazon Linux Core Engineering (ALCE) is the team responsible for coordinating the end-to-end development of Amazon Linux (AL), with contributions from multiple other teams.

The work of building and maintaining AL includes upstream collaboration, bug and security fixes, package updates, and automated testing and CI to build AMIs and repositories.

We also support internal customers migrating their fleets to newer versions of Amazon Linux, collecting feedback and requirements.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 8+ years of engineering experience
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring / coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
  • Knowledge about OS internals and software development on Linux, such as the POSIX standard, build systems, packaging, and utilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
  • Proven contributions (in the form of code) and direct collaboration (in the form of discussions) to upstream open source projects, preferably at the system-level

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400 / year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700 / year in our highest geographic market.

Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and / or other benefits.
