Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Lab Technician for the Human Genetics Institute of NJ. Under general guidance and direction, provides professional level laboratory technical support duties involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.
Among the key duties of this position are the following :
- Works with a research supervisor but also be capable of working independently to perform lab work in this area.
- Maintains an accurate and detailed lab notebook and presentations of data.
- Works in a team based setting.
- Performs multistage purifications, other assays, and tests.
- Propagates non-animal specimens and cell cultures.
- Prepares tissues, chemicals, and / or living subjects for testing.
- Conducts breeding of small animals and performs related duties as assigned.
- Uses the genetically tractable C. elegans systems to study processes relevant to human health and disease using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and microscopy / imaging.

Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline and / or a combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests and / or an additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience in the above combination.
Certifications / Licenses
Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Standard laboratory techniques include ability to design, organize and track large genetic screens, transgenesis, phenotypic analysis, dissecting, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.
- Knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
- Must understand the fundamentals of the science.
- Must read and understand technical documents.
- Must perform basic scientific routines, protocols, and tests and articulate data to researchers.
- Must operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
- Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
- Must be able to communicate effectively.
- Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
- May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers’ Defensive Driving Course.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting large scale genetic screens.
Equipment Utilized
Must be familiar with Microsoft Office and Adobe, PCR machines. Familiar with PCR machines, dissecting microscopes, Zeiss light(inverted and upright), epifluorescence, and / or confocal microscopes.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Lift and move up to 30 pounds and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
- Able to stand, lift, bend.
- Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands.
- Long periods of standing and / or sitting.
- Regular workweek may include evening and / or weekend work.
Special Conditions
- Skilled with standard life science laboratory techniques such as genetic analysis, transgenesis, CRISPR and recombinant DNA techniques, phenotypic analysis, dissecting, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.
