2025 Program Information
Duquesne Light Company offers summer internships that provide a hands-on, meaningful employment opportunity in a supportive setting that cultivates learning and collaboration.
Duquesne Light's internship program will provide you with a valuable experience and a solid start to your career in various disciplines.
- Internships are full-time (40 hours / week), paid, and run for 12 weeks (May-August).
- Internships are located in Pittsburgh and follow DLH's Hybrid Work Model (described below).
- Candidates must be full-time, degree-seeking students enrolled in an accredited college or university and have completed their Sophomore year of studies.
- Candidates must be in good academic standing.
- Candidates must be willing to work the required schedule as defined in the job description.
- Demonstrated leadership ability through studies, employment or extracurricularactivities.
- Aptitude for problem solving; strong communication skills.
Overall Purpose :
From maintaining our overhead and underground equipment to protecting our critical infrastructure and so much more, Duquesne Light Company's (DLC) Operations department keeps the lights on and the grid intact.
Every Operations employee plays a critical role in ensuring that DLC powers the moments in our customers' lives.
The increasing frequency and severity of weather-related incidents, as highlighted in our ESG Report and NOAA data, along with evolving regulatory requirements, demand a robust and proactive emergency management program.
Furthermore, the complexity of threats to business continuity, such as cyber-attacks and IT disruptions, underscores the need for comprehensive disaster recovery planning.
Intern Job Duties
- Plan Development : Assist in updating and developing emergency operations plans, storm response annex, and the emergency action plan.
- Training and Exercises : Support the design, coordination, and evaluation of incident management drills and exercises.
- Incident Analysis : Aid in AARs for real incidents and exercises, taking notes and entering them into the improvement plan.
- Stakeholder Engagement : Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to integrate emergency management best practices.
- Documentation and Reporting : Assist in maintaining records of emergency plans, drills, and incidents, ensuring compliance with PUC self-reporting requirements.
- Plan Enhancement : Assist stakeholders with refining and updating their business continuity plans, ensuring they can fully answer questions with the BC SAAS.
- Disaster Recovery Testing : Assist in the planning and execution of disaster recovery exercises, including tabletop exercises and full-scale testing of recovery procedures- including IT fail overs.
- Risk Assessment : Support the identification and assessment of risks to business continuity, providing input into mitigation strategies with Enterprise Risk Management.
- Reviews : Help review, and update BC policies and procedures related to BCDR ensuring they are up-to-date and being held to standard ISO22301 : 2019.
- Data Analysis : Analyze the results of continuity exercises and real incidents to aid in AARs and enter them into the improvement plan.
Education / Experience :
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program inEmergency Management, Business Systems, Fire Science, Political Science, Public Health, Biosecurity, Safety / Security.
Skills / Abilities :
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment.
Physical Requirements :
Work will be conducted in a hybrid environment with some time working remotely, and some time required to be in-office / on-site.
Candidates must be within close proximity to Pittsburgh.
Other :
Applicants must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment background check, drug screen, and social media screen.
Hybrid Work :
All internships follow our hybrid work model, with a minimum of two days working in the office and the remaining days working remotely.
Interns must be in the immediate Pittsburgh area for the summer. Reporting location and frequency may be subject to change based on job role and department needs.
