Position Announcement :

The Department of German and Scandinavian at the University of Oregon seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Global Studies and Languages, starting Fall 2025.

We are looking for a colleague who specializes in Environmental Humanities in German Studies, with a primary linguistic and cultural focus on German within a transnational context.

Essential qualifications include the equivalent of C2 proficiency, as well as experience teaching in German, and a PhD in German or a related discipline by the time of appointment.

Additional expertise in a Scandinavian language and culture, or another language and culture, would be welcome. Interest in climate politics or technology would also be a plus.

We value teaching and research that complement the department's focus areas, including romanticism, modernism, folklore, Jewish studies, critical theory, psychoanalysis, decolonial studies, and gender studies.

The successful candidate will embrace a transnational and global perspective and teach in the German undergraduate and graduate programs as well as more broadly in the School of Global Studies and Languages and the College of Arts and Sciences.

Department or Program Summary :

The Department of German and Scandinavian sustains thriving undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral programs and lively collaborative relations with departments such as Comparative Literature, Art History, Philosophy, and the School of Music.

The department publishes the digital German Studies journal Konturen. Additional opportunities exist for engaging with the UO’s research and teaching programs and centers in Environmental Studies, European Studies, and Environmental & Natural Resources Law.

Minimum Requirements :

  • PhD in German or a relevant humanities or interdisciplinary program by appointment time
  • Superior proficiency in German and English
  • Experience teaching in the German language
  • Specialization in Environmental Humanities

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Promising publication record
  • Experience teaching non-native learners of German, and U.S. undergraduates
  • Knowledge of a Scandinavian language and culture and / or another language and culture
  • Commitment and contribution to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Interest in climate change politics and / or technology
  • Teaching and research that complement the department’s focus areas
