The Global Law and Public Policy Practice Group of Arnold & Porter has an International Policy Advisor opening in the Washington, DC office.

The International Policy Advisor provides primary support to former Ambassador(s) and / or congressional personnel.

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to :

  • Engaging in analysis and research for the Ambassador(s) and / or congressional personnel as requested.
  • Assisting with the drafting and facilitation of client proposals, contracts, and bids for new work.
  • Monitoring business developments related to client initiatives and foreign policy.
  • Preparing detailed itineraries, including important numbers, locations, and contact names.
  • Preparing monthly projected schedules.
  • Maintaining a current contact database in InterAction.
  • Reviewing Ambassador(s) and / or congressional personnel's mail and invitations.
  • Coordinating and assisting with the preparation for Ambassador(s) speaking engagements and fellowships.
  • Facilitating interviews and calls with media outlets.
  • Assisting with drafting end-of-year reflections for firm leadership.
  • Responding to all invitations, either by written correspondence or by personal telephone call.
  • Maintaining files of invitations that have been declined, accepted, or tentative / pending.
  • Maintaining the Ambassador(s) and / or congressional personnel's files, including notes, correspondence, and all information relating to travel.
  • Preparing guest lists and invitations for events, ensuring that they are properly delivered, and verifying acceptances / regrets.
  • Working with the Ambassador(s) and / or congressional personnel to develop and maintain contact lists and guest lists for receptions, lunches, dinners, and other representational activities.

Ensuring that the data is accurate.

  • Participating in meetings, conferences, and social functions to aid on matters of protocol.
  • Maintaining a calendar of special events of interest for Ambassador(s).
  • Handling all visa arrangements for foreign travel.
  • Assisting with special projects as directed by the Ambassador(s) and / or congressional personnel.

Qualifications :

  • Two-year degree or equivalent experience considered.
  • Prior experience providing scheduling and protocol support to an Ambassador or Congress / Senate member.
  • Strong database and internet research skills.
  • Proficiency in Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite and / or related software.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to act with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and respect for confidentiality and cultural diversity.
  • Ability to maintain a range of contacts.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with people at all levels within the firm and outside the firm.
  • Must possess good judgment.
  • Experience making visa and travel arrangements.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Possess reliability, dependability and motivation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while exhibiting a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously.
  • Exceptional client service, both internal and external.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours, as necessary.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $90,000 to $120,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and / or from which they will be performing the job.
