Job Purpose and Objectives : One of the primary duties of a patrol deputy is to deter crime through regular patrolling of neighborhoods, highways, and other public spaces. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the community by responding to emergencies, accidents, and calls for service. Enforcing laws by issuing citations, making arrests, and handling various law enforcement duties like traffic violations, disturbances, and public order issues. Maintaining a visible presence in the community to promote a sense of safety and to act as a deterrent to criminal activity.

Cultural Competencies :

• Cultural Awareness : A patrol deputy should be aware of the cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds of the people they serve. This awareness helps in understanding the perspectives, values, and potential needs of community members. Recognizing the history of different groups, particularly marginalized or historically oppressed communities, helps to avoid biases and facilitates respectful interactions.
• Respect for Cultural Differences : Deputies should be educated about cultural differences, such as customs, communication styles and appropriate behaviors. A deputy should be respectful and mindful when interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds, avoiding stereotyping and discrimination.
• Effective Communication : Deputies should have access to language resources to communicate effectively with individuals who speak languages other than English. Being able to communicate directly or through an interpreter can help ensure individuals feel understood. Listening attentively builds rapport and can de-escalate potential tense situations.
• Bias Awareness and Implicit Bias Training : Deputies need to understand potential biases and learn strategies to address them. Take regular training classes on implicit biases to help make more objective decisions.
• Community Engagement and Relationship Building : Deputies need to build strong, trust-based relationships with individuals from various backgrounds. Work collaboratively with community members to help understand local concerns and solve problems together.
• Legal and Human Rights Knowledge : Deputies need to have knowledge of cultural rights, to help serve all individuals in a fair and lawful manner. Understand the importance of avoiding racial profiling. Promote equality and fairness to create positive relationships with communities.
• Education and Continuous Learning : Deputies must have ongoing education on cultural competency for regular training to help them stay updated on the cultural dynamics within the communities. Should be open to learning directly from the people they serve.

o Indoors – Occasionally in usually well lit, heated and / or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. May have to encounter harsh / hazardous dwellings (search warrants, narcotics, Police Protective Custody)

o Driving / Travel – Constant driving and occasional travel, which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions.

o Could encounter hazardous substances such as fentanyl or methamphetamine, and people with communicable diseases such as AIDs, HIV, or Hepatitis

o Basic office equipment to include computer, copy machine, fax machine, printer, telephone system.

o Computer software programs and applications such as MS Office, Enterpol and RMS.

o Using Fingers / hands – Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
