Other Conditions : Extramural funds. To begin approximately June 1, 2022 or soon thereafter. Continuation dependent on satisfactory performance, program needs and renewal of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Under the direction of Principal Investigators and Project Coordinator, provide support for a federal research project relating to improving writing instruction for K-8 teachers in schools with high percentages of Native students.

Specifically, the tasks will include :

  • Helping write, develop and edit teacher training material, lesson plans and other curricular matter according to the specification of the grant narrative consistent with sound principles of effective writing instruction and Native Hawaiian cultural values;
  • Assist in presentation of training materials and other experiential activities to teachers and their support staff;
  • Assisting in collecting and providing assessment feedback to program material from participating teachers;
  • Organize data files;
  • Assisting in scheduling of team meetings;
  • Assisting with survey and other instruments development and review;
  • Assisting in conducting literature reviews pertaining to research project;
  • Conducting focus groups and / or interviews with project participants;
  • Transcribing focus groups and interviews;
  • Creating presentation and promotional material (physical and digital) for conference presentations, newsletters, and websites.

Attend regular team meetings and Center-wide meetings and events.Perform other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications :

  • Classified, full-time (minimum of 6 credits) in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above).
  • Experience teaching, mentoring students, and / or making presentations.
  • Basic knowledge of local and Hawaiian culture and language.
  • Ability to work responsibly and in a timely manner, both collaboratively as well as independently.
  • Ability to write effectively and to edit written products such as articles, newsletters, and lesson plans.
  • Organizational skills necessary to effectively organize data files and to schedule events and meetings.
  • Ability to collect data in multiple forms and provide feedback and support to project participants.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical site / school locations in a timely manner.
  • Basic proficiency in a variety of digital platforms which may include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint, Macintosh software programs, Google Suite, Zoom, Asana and Slack.

Desirable Qualifications :

  • Graduate student in Education, Social Sciences, English or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience teaching language arts or similar content.
  • Experience with K-8 students and / or working / collaborating with K-8 teachers.
  • Experience teaching or providing training or professional development, especially online.
  • Experience designing media with digital tools like Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Experience teaching in Hawaii schools.
  • Experience with educational research or programs involving local populations such as members of Native Hawaiian communities and Pacific-island communities.
  • Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching.
