Vice President, Program Management (Biotechnology Oncology Clinical Development)

SUMMARY / JOB PURPOSE :

The VP, Program Management oversees project management support for Franchise Teams and Development Teams that manage strategic planning and operational execution activities for assets in the development pipeline.

Functions as, and supervises, Project Managers who develop and maintain project plans, Gantts / timelines, status reports, strategic development and filing plans in collaboration with team leaders and cross-functional members of teams.

Oversees and manages the operational aspects of ongoing oncology drug development projects (IND-enabling, Phase 1 to 3, NDA / BLA filing submissions) and serves as liaison between project teams and executive management.

The VP, Program Management also provides support to the Chief Medical Officer for operational aspects of the Product Development and Medical Affairs (PDMA) organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Maintains extensive knowledge of the Exelixis research and development efforts and has a thorough understanding of the tasks required in all stages of development.
  • Responsible for defining product team expectations and commitments and ensuring that projects continue to make scientific and strategic sense.
  • Works closely with members of the Discovery and Translational Research and Product Development organizations to ensure a smooth transition of projects from research into development and from early to late-stage clinical development.
  • Supports and consults with the functional heads / staff to assist in the functional planning of projects.
  • Tracks program and department-level activities, resources, and budgets.
  • Follows up with teams to ensure that project timelines, budgets and resource usage and project milestones are within agreed limits.

Reconciles any deviations between plan and actual with functional area managers.

  • Actively participates in budget and resource planning for functions within PDMA.
  • Drives goal-setting for asset-level development activities and PDMA functions. Regularly tracks and reports progress against goals.
  • Ensures the effective communication of project planning information to the organization.
  • Administers Development-stage governance processes to ensure strategic and operational oversight of development activities.
  • May act as project manager for one or more Early Franchise Teams responsible for cross-functional strategic planning and oversight of pre-IND and early clinical stage programs.
  • Develops and maintains procedures, standard templates (models), budgets and plans for project planning.
  • Develops and maintains project plans, timelines, strategic development plans and development product profiles in collaboration with team leaders and lead cross-functional members of teams.
  • Provides Project Management in support of licensing, co-development and / or collaboration relationships. Responsible for management of execution against agreed upon goals and project milestones.
  • Supports execution of company sponsored publication plan to ensure timely production of manuscripts and other communication tools.
  • Ensures compliance with Exelixis policies and procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Directly supervises employees. May indirectly supervise employee(s) via subordinate managers.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS :

Education / Experience :

  • BS / BA degree in related discipline and a minimum of twenty-one years of related experience; or,
  • MS / MA degree in related discipline and a minimum of nineteen years of related experience; or,
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) with a minimum of seventeen years of related experience; or,
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require certification in assigned area.

Experience / The Ideal for Successful Entry into Job :

  • Requires a minimum of eighteen years of related experience and / or combination of experience and education / training.
  • Biotechnology / pharmaceutical industry experience essential with at least 10 years' experience in one or more areas associated with drug discovery and development.
  • Financial training or experience.
  • Experience in a scientific, business or project management field.

Knowledge / Skills :

  • Strong understanding of the full Drug Development process.
  • Applies broad expertise and skills to the development of company objectives and principles, and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
  • Demonstrated ability in attending to detail and performing multiple complex tasks.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project planning methods and techniques.
  • Proficiency in computer applications (MS : Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) and project management organizational and budgeting tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills.

  • Applies advanced technical expertise in areas of specialty and has a wide breadth of knowledge in related disciplines.
  • Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments and may provide guidance and oversee the activities of other lower-level personnel.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS :

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets, and we pay differently based on those defined markets.

The base pay range for this position is $299,000 - $347,000 annually. The base pay range may take into account the candidate's geographic region, which will adjust the pay depending on the specific work location.

The base pay offered will take into account the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience and internal equity, among other factors.

In addition to the base salary, as part of our Total Rewards program, Exelixis offers comprehensive employee benefits package, including a 401k plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts.

Employees are also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus program, or if field sales staff, a sales-based incentive plan.

Exelixis also offers employees the opportunity to purchase company stock, and receive long-term incentives, 15 accrued vacation days in their first year, 17 paid holidays including a company-wide winter shutdown in December, and up to 10 sick days throughout the calendar year.
