Building Maintenance Mechanic I
Description
Performs regular maintenance on the city's building, grounds, equipment, and systems; works with outside contractors; troubleshoots minor electrical, plumbing and HVAC needs;
orders and receives supplies; and performs daily and monthly building inspections.
The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.
When Assigned to Public Works :
- Performs light, building repairs by working with electrical fixtures; ordering and stocking light tubes and ballast; replacing lights as needed;
- unstopping toilets; repairing leaks; inspecting and cleaning hot water boiler; working with sprinkler company for needed repairs;
cleaning drains; responding to situations as needed and work shifts as assigned.
- Prepares tools, equipment and working area by cleaning and caring for tools and equipment; preparing surfaces and painting interior and exterior walls, building, grounds structures and equipment.
- Coordinates with outside contractors by providing various repair assistance; troubleshooting problems prior to calling outside vendors or contractors;
and maintaining professionalism and positive working relationships with vendors and contractors.
Maintains written records, logs and reports as required; Participates in safety awareness programs and training. Recognizes and reports and unsafe conditions, areas, equipment and / or procedures and is constantly vigilant regarding safe working conditions;
works on power lifts at 60’ heights or less.
- Perform on call duty as assigned.
- Provide emergency response during severe weather (snow, floods, storms, etc.)
When Assigned to Police (Juvenile Detention) :
- Performs light, plumbing, and camera repairs by climbing ladders; working with electrical fixtures; ordering and stocking light tubes and ballast;
- replacing lights as needed; unstopping toilets; repairing leaks; inspecting and cleaning hot water boiler; working with sprinkler company for needed repairs;
cleaning drains; inspecting and adjusting cameras as needed; replacing old cameras and equipment as needed; and installing additional cameras.
- Performs general repairs and maintenance of equipment, fixtures, and the interior structure of the building; including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical, security, painting, and mechanical as reported or as identified through scheduled building inspections;
- replacing lights; unstopping toilets and sinks; replacing cameras; inspecting and testing the boiler and generator; repairing leaks;
- painting walls and doors; replacing windows; removing and replacing damaged equipment and furnishings;
- Participates in the maintenance of the grounds by trimming trees and branches; pruning trees, bushes, and shrubs; inspecting security fence;
pulling weeds; and assisting with the greenhouse and nursery as needed.
Coordinates with outside contractors by providing various repair assistance; troubleshooting problems prior to calling outside vendors or contractors;
and maintaining professionalism and positive working relationships with vendors and contractors; adheres to scheduled maintenance contracts.
Responds to on-call and emergency situations as needed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED supplemented by six months / year post-secondary study or training : e.g. vocational, business, technical school, and one to two years of experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above
Certifications / Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License (CDL Class A) with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria
- NIMS Certification
Job Knowledge
Basic familiarity with the work to know common principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
Reading
Intermediate : Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, and thesauruses.
Writing
Intermediate : Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Math

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Typically requires use of computer and related software and hardware; various hand tools; various tools related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical work;
and any other equipment as appropriate or required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed outside and in a shop where there is frequent exposure to mechanical hazards. There is occasional exposure to chemical and physical hazards, wetness / humidity, and extreme temperatures.
The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel toe shoes;
eye, hearing, respiratory, chemical, electrical protection, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
