The Associate Dean provides leadership for the academic programs within the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health.

The Associate Dean in consultation with the Dean facilitates the administrative and personnel responsibilities of the departments, student services, and continuing education program.

The position serves as Acting Dean in the absence of the Dean.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Administration

  • Direct, plan, develop and coordinate the academic programs (Social Work, Public Health, Center on Aging, Continuous Education, Online).
  • Direct, plan, develop, and coordinate evaluation and performance improvement of academic programs.
  • Review proposals and recommend approval of new or revised programs, curriculum and courses.
  • Develop and monitor the instruction budget and resource allocation with the Department Chairs.
  • Ensure Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health (Thompson School) is aligned with Manoa initiatives for student recruitment, admission, progression, and graduation.
  • Collaborate with department chairs to analyze demographic trends and promote diversity in the applicant pool.
  • Develop, administer, and coordinate admission schedule timelines, procedures, and catalogue.
  • Ensure effective use of instructional technology.
  • Coordinate accreditation processes.
  • Develop and maintain updated clinical and community affiliation agreements and database.
  • Manage compensated and non-compensated faculty affairs including recruitment, appointments and contract renewal.
  • Ensure review of and preparation of faculty contract renewal, tenure, and promotion documents.
  • Administrative liaison to departmental committees.
  • Prepare reports to school, campus, and regulatory agencies.

Educational Leadership and Scholarship

  • Develop, monitor, and manage reporting on the Thompson School Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinate administrative efforts to demonstrate sensitivity to issues and concerns of the School’s diverse constituencies.
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to the academic components of the school.
  • Collaborate with department chairs to support the academic mission.
  • Develop a comprehensive programmatic effort for faculty instructional support at all levels of experience.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of faculty development.
  • Collaborate with community partnerships to ensure practice and industry support for the academic mission.
  • Collaborate with peers in the academic health sciences schools to support inter-professional education.
  • Monitor trends in education to ensure that the school is providing state of the art pedagogy and programs to enhance student learning.
  • Identify and support successful extramural funding of academic programs.
  • Provide input to the Dean on matters related to academics.

Other Duties

  • Represent the Dean as needed in community activities.
  • Represent administration with student organizations.
  • Maintain a network of state and national relationships.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree in social work, public health, or related field.
  • Attained academic rank of tenured Associate Professor or comparable professional experience from an accredited college or university prior to appointment.
  • Progressive experience in administration in an academic environment.
  • Attained scholarly accomplishments in social work, public health, or health sciences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and equity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively w / internal & external constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to consultative processes & shared governance.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years’ experience in administration in academic environment.
  • Experience in fiscal and human resources management at system level.
  • Experience in distance learning education in an academic setting.
  • Experience in academic program development.
