Job Summary : HonorBridge is looking for an In-House Donation Specialist. The In-House Donation Specialist (IHDS) is responsible for achieving or exceeding goals in organ and tissue donation by serving as the in-house HonorBridge liaison at assigned hospital, ECU Health Medical Center.

The IHDS is responsible for the clinical evaluation of potential donor patients, the collaboration with hospital staff in preservation of donation options, the presentation of donation options to legal next-of-kin / family support and obtaining authorization for organ and tissue donation.

Additionally, the IHDS is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key hospital partners and participating in educational and donation follow-up activities.

  • Donation Systems
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with hospital staff involved in the donation process.
  • Collaborates with assigned Hospital Liaison as needed for donation activity follow-up.
  • Completes rounds in units daily.
  • Participates in formal and education educational programs for hospital stakeholders.
  • Clinical Responsibilities.
  • Provides timely onsite responses to organ referrals in assigned hospital
  • Collaborates with HonorBridge's Administrator-on-Call (AOC) to determine suitability of organ referrals and determine next steps following initial evaluation of potential organ donors.
  • Follows-up on all active referrals and maintains close communication with AOC's and clinical colleagues to maintain option for donation on suitable candidates.
  • After patient is an authorized donor, inputs required documentation into HonorBridge's Electronic Medical Records (EMR) database and begins the process to start the case, which may include, but is not limited to, verification of proper brain death documentation, donor assessment, order placement, and initial standard notifications.
  • Performs collection of specimens for ABO and infectious disease determination (including labeling and shipping) for organ cases.
  • Ensures that all donation-related documentation is compliant with HonorBridge and hospital policy.
  • Facilitates organ recovery of uncontrolled donation after circulatory death (uDCD)
  • Family Services
  • Huddles with patient care team to obtain information about the patient's hospital course and family's understanding of patient's condition, while establishing appropriate communication pathways relating to end-of-life care decisions and authorization for donation, in order to establish a plan for the donation conversation.
  • Presents the option of donation to the legal next-of-kin. Acts as the professional resource to the family regarding the options of organ and tissue donation.
  • Obtains authorization or provides disclosure with first-person authorization for organ and tissue donation and completes the signed and witnessed forms per HonorBridge policy.
  • Conducts a donor risk assessment questionnaire (DRAI) with a person or persons who have knowledge of the potential donor's medical and social history.
  • Demonstrates compassionate family supportive care, with respect during family's bereavement and decision-making processes.
  • When appropriate, provides onsite support to families, including presence for honor walks, flag ceremonies, and commemorative activities.
  • Will maintain EMR access to all available hospitals
  • Utilizes medical information from remote or onsite EMR access to obtain and review available medical records
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and donor / recipient information
  • Responds to administrative duties to include internal and external communication, projects and QA tasks in a timely manner as defined by HonorBridge leadership
  • Documents hospital activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Administrator on Call and HonorBridge leadership

What we are looking for :

  • An Associates Degree in a relevant healthcare field is required. Bachelors Degree strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years experience in a relevant healthcare field is required
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data in high-pressure situations
  • Knowledge of operating room environment
  • Experience in form completion and documentation
  • Commitment to organ and tissue donation.
  • Valid state driver's license required.
