Find your superpower with the Graduate Development Program

National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry.

Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we’ll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US.

Following Orientation, you’ll begin working in the full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

About the Position

As an Associate Engineer, you will be working in the US Offshore Development business unit supporting engineering of onshore and offshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems including for offshore wind projects.

You will interface with equipment suppliers, engineering consultants, and permitting consultants to support work packages during project development, preliminary engineering, detailed design, construction, and commissioning.

  • Support the broader Business Development team during project origination and development
  • Support project engineering and construction
  • Support integration of HVDC systems with high voltage alternating current (HVAC) onshore and offshore grids
  • Perform electrical design and technical evaluations of offshore transmission projects
  • Work across all phases of projects, including feasibility assessments, proposal write-ups, cost and pricing development, stakeholder engagement, and project permitting

This is a hybrid role with 1 day a week in the office or local site.

What You'll Do

You will be a part of an innovative, dynamic, and mission-driven team!

You will :

  • Support workstreams responsible for conceptual design through project delivery of HVDC systems to interconnect large offshore wind farms
  • Perform technical assessments of electric HVDC requirements, including siting and design for onshore converter stations and offshore converter platforms
  • Perform cost estimation as needed to help pursue most economically advantageous options
  • Support technical reports, studies and drawings associated with HVDC systems including considerations for the electrical and civil design of HVDC converter stations and associated HVAC equipment
  • Support technical analysis as needed to support potential project partnerships
  • Document, report and present findings and justifications
  • Prepare executive summaries and investment committee papers
  • Support siting, permitting and licensing requirements and / or hearings, if required
  • Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across NG functions in the US and UK and partner companies across the globe
  • Support technical work with external vendors, including support of tendering and execution of Requests for Information (RFIs) and Requests for Proposals (RFPs)

What You'll Need

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution

Graduated between May 2024 and June 2025

Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 2, 2025 or July 7, 2025

Valid driver’s license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy

Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization)

Brooklyn, New York $87,000- $102,000

Please note US Colleagues must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont.

As a National Grid employee, you should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
