POSITION PURPOSE :

Provides direct instructional services to AIG students and those deemed highly capable at the position's assigned school(s).

Identifies students with gifted potential or characteristics through testing, data gathering, and analysis. Provides school wide leadership related to gifted education and attends AIG professional development within Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Extensive knowledge of research based instructional practices related to gifted education;
  • Considerable knowledge and use of current instructional technology including but not limited to wikis, PBworks, blackboard, e-mail, and website updates;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office specifically, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher;
  • Critical thinking skills with the initiative to learn new concepts as they relate to AIG;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Effective time management and organizational skills;
  • Strategic problem-solving skills, including the use of multiple data points;
  • Ability to design and deliver professional development with knowledge of technology-based training techniques;
  • Ability to evaluate professional development to ensure topics and information are being implemented;
  • Ability to transfer gift education concepts and practices across all content areas;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, students, parents, and the public.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in education;

Five years of experience as a teacher.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Hold or be qualified to hold a North Carolina professional educator’s license in an elementary or middle grade content teaching area.

Within two years of employment hold or be qualified to hold a North Carolina professional educator’s license in AIG.

Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Provides academic services to extend enrich and accelerate the standard course of study in accordance with the local AIG plan.

2. Performs in a manner that meets the standards and elements of the teacher evaluation instrument.

3. Models problem solving and higher order thinking skills, and demonstrates instructional innovations through push-in and pull-out instructional delivery.

4. Analyzes and interprets gifted learner tests and performance data, and shares the results with all relevant stakeholders.

5. Maintains and implements current AIG initiatives and instructional methodologies to provide cognitively challenging experiences to students.

6. Teaches gifted and talented select electives to state-identified and WCPSS identified students in magnet school settings.

7. Teaches third grade Explorers curriculum to nurture students' gifted potential (elementary schools only).

8. Coordinates and administers individual and small group AIG testing as required.

9. Communicates system wide and school specific AIG program information to all relevant stakeholders.

10. Understands and utilizes technology as an instructional and communication tool.

11. Maintains AIG program and student records.

12. Attends AIG district meetings and professional development.

13. Serves as chair for the School Based Committee for Gifted Education.

14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS : PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to use a variety of office equipment and classroom tools such as computers, scanners, fax machines, and copiers;

as well as equipment for children with special needs. Must be able to communicate effectively. At times requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to twenty-five pounds.

The work frequently requires activities involving driving automotive equipment. Due to the amount of time spent standing and / or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for medium work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to work in a school environment and come into direct contact with school system staff, students, parents, and the public.

Travel is required among WCPSS schools and central services locations.
