HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
- The Senior Construction & Maintenance Worker will perform journey-level carpentry work throughout the San Diego Zoo ’ s facilities and animal habitats;
- construct and repair buildings, walls, fences, docks, and other structures; build, install, and repair window frames, door frames, doors, screens, counters, office furniture, partitions, locksets, and other related hardware;
- prepare walls for plaster and stucco work; operate jointers, shapers, drill presses, table saw and similar tools; ability to read plans and blueprints;
estimate materials and labor costs; perform other duties as assigned. This position reports to the C&M Manager.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Alters, repairs, or constructs articles and structures of wood, such as partitions, counters, doors, window frames, sheds, scaffolds, forms, and fences
- Repairs office furniture, equipment, cabinets, and wooden fixtures, performing mill and cabinet work as necessary
- Maintains and repairs woodwork of buildings
- Builds closets, cases, and shelving
- Fits doors, windows, sashes, and screens
- Operates planers, sharpeners, jointers, band saws, table saws, and other woodworking tools, equipment, and machinery
- Sharpens hand tools
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Candidates with carpentry experience in new construction projects, extensive remodeling project, cabinetry, and millwork experience.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays. This position requires successful completion of physical ability test.
- JOB EXPERIENCE - You must meet ONE of the following options :
- Successful completion of a state-accredited four-year Carpenter Apprenticeship Program
- Four years of full-time experience in all phases of work as a journey-level carpenter, which MUST include two years of qualifying experience in commercial and / or industrial carpentry.
- Qualifying experience must include THREE of the following : Shop and mill work; interior finish work; exterior covering and finish work;
or foundation, form construction, and framing work
- EDUCATION AND CERFICATIONS
- Education, training, and / or experience as a journey-level the essential functions, knowledge and skills outlined
- A current and valid California driver license in good standing
- SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Methods, practices, and procedures in one or more of the building and construction trades
- Tools, equipment, and materials used in one or more of the building and construction trades
- Work and material estimating
- General water chemistry
- Safely and properly handle and operate the tools and equipment used in the assigned building and construction trade(s)
- Recognize and discriminate between colors and / or sounds
- Make simple arithmetic calculations
- Understand and carry out instructions
- Deal tactfully and courteously with others in a diverse environment
- Understand, interpret, and work from blueprints / drawings
- Competently perform the duties of one or more of the building and construction trades outlined

- Position Type : Hourly Full-Time Non-Exempt Union Position - If selected, there will be fees and dues to be paid to the union
- Hourly Rate : $28.98
