Role Overview :
The Part-Time Communications Manager will be pivotal in managing the external communications strategy and branding for the VCU College of Health Professions Department of Gerontology and the Virginia Center on Aging.
This position involves overseeing various communication channels, content creation, audience engagement, event coordination, and media relations to enhance the visibility and reputation of the department and center.
Responsibilities :
External Communications Strategy :
- Work together with other team members to develop and implement an effective external communications strategy to promote the department and center's initiatives and achievements.
- Serve as the initial point of contact for external communications inquiries and collaborations.
Brand Monitoring :
Work to monitor and maintain a cohesive branding strategy to ensure consistency across all communication channels and materials.
Social Media Management :
- Generate content based on copy and information provided by the team and manage and maintain presence on social media platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube.
- Develop and manage a streamlined workflow to coordinate smooth scheduling and efficient scheduling of social media posts.
- Schedule posts and monitor messages and comments for timely responses.
Newsletter Management :
- Design and schedule various departmental newsletters, ensuring alignment with the departmental Style Guide.
- Manage audience maintenance tasks such as reviewing subscriber emails, adding new members, and soliciting subscribers.
Student Recruitment Support :
- Promotion of student information sessions and follow-up emails.
- Assist with Google Ads campaigns, classroom presentations, and marketing via various platforms, including TelegRAM.
Annual Update and Anniversary Events :
- Create materials for annual updates and anniversary events including save the date, invitations, and other promotional materials.
- Host virtual events via Zoom, send reminders, and follow up with attendees.
Website Management :
Working alongside other team members and CHP web employees, update and maintain the department and center's website with current information and resources.
Dissemination of Materials :
- Create promotional materials such as flyers, infographics, issue briefs, and research briefs.
- Occasional tabling at conferences and events to disseminate materials and engage with attendees.
Media Relations :
- Send articles to CHP News and VCU PR for publication.
- Pitch stories and initiatives to journalists to secure media coverage.
Required Qualifications :
- A minimum of 2-3 years experience in professional online communications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in online platforms and tools such as social media, simple website updates, Canva, etc.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Familiarity with graphic design software and email marketing platforms is a plus.
