Overview Provides magnetic resonance imaging procedures within scope of practice, including receiving and preparing patients and equipment for procedures and maintaining supplies for the MRI department.

Produces high quality scans by following protocols set forth by the radiology department. Operates MRI equipment in a safe and proficient manner within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.

Works with students from approved educational institutions. Qualifications EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT Associate's degree from a 2-year college or technical school;

or two years (60 credit hours) coursework from 4-year college or university; or three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist I : An additional one (1) year of experience is required.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging experience preferred. Computed Tomography experience preferred. Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist II : An additional two (2) years of experience is required.

Computed Tomography Experience preferred but not required. COMPUTER SKILLS An individual should have knowledge of Database software;

Internet software; Inventory software; Order processing systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must be currently certified in Radiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (R).

Must obtain BLS and maintain during employment. Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Employee must not and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals / Entities (LEIE).

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act.

Practices only within the boundaries of competence, based on documented education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience.

Selects appropriate scan parameters for safety of pediatric and adult patients. Provides health services of scope, quality, and quantity consistent with Cherokee Nation policies.

Communicates effectively with patient care team members to answer questions. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology to perform MR exams on patients of all ages.

Exams include MR and MRA of head, neck, heart, chest, breast, abdomen, pelvis, extremities and advanced MR exams. Assists Radiologist in performing MRI biopsies.

Skilled in the safe operation of highly complex magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment and automated contrast agent pressure injectors (power injector) to perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) examinations per request.

Performs quality control for MRI equipment, power injector, crash cart and blanket warmer devices. Maintains stock supply of disposables used in the MRI department.

Ensures completion of all duties, accurately demonstrates anatomy and pathology, uses proper MRI techniques, annotation, anatomical and pathological demonstration, and correct any errors.

Maintains working knowledge of all MRI equipment used in the department including protocols and procedures. Enters data accurately into the computer systems(s) and ensures completeness of patient paperwork.

Demonstrates flexibility to the demands of patient care by coming in early and / or staying late. Practices responsible use of communication tools (paging system, telephones, e-mail, fax, etc.

corrects problems as they arise and notifies supervisor / manager when assistance is required to do so. Interprets orders such as patient requisition, including special instructions.

Ensure support and proper documentation for all quality assurance standards, to include, but not limited to, patient screening forms, examination journal entries, record-keeping of all supplies / medications administered, and compliance with designated image archive medium.

Ensures the patient is imaged in a safe environment, free of hazards and identifies patients using approved identifiers.

Identifies, interviews, and screens patients and visitors to meet all standard safety operation procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, screening for persons with pacemakers, implanted electronic or metallic devices or aneurysm clips;

communication with patient regarding procedure, order verification and patient identification and conducts pre / post assessment of patient / visitor.

Provides full attention to the patient and the procedure, addressing and handling patient care concerns, and seeking opportunities to assist in overall patient care activities.

Provides any life support measures needed. Identifies, interviews and screens patients for possible contradictions to contrast material.

Administers contrast materials while adhering to prescribed aseptic technique at the direction of the radiologist. Notifies provider of adverse reactions (i.

e., patient identification, power injector operations, and conscious sedation procedures, etc.). Images patients utilizing approved protocols / procedures, sterile or aseptic technique where applicable, and brings question forward before imaging patients.

Exhibits professional and courteous customer service at all times and demonstrates knowledge of Age Specific Criteria in carrying out work duties and tasks.

Initiates delegated tasks based on demonstrated competence in performing MRI service for patient population served (i.e.

anatomical position, proper breathing instruction, effective MR imaging coil selection, compliance with procedure protocols, etc.

Recognizes examination findings that may require immediate clinical response and notifies the interpreting radiologist (i.

e. requesting a STAT Read). Discusses with the radiologist the MR findings and uses cognitive skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures based on diagnostic information received.

Recognizes patient distress signs, initiates and follows emergency procedures. Maintains current required licensure and certifications and follows division and department specific policies, procedures, guidelines and protocols.

Demonstrates adherence to accreditation standards, ethics, initiatives and applicable state / federal licensure and guidelines.

Satisfies department in-services and continuing education requirements for the institution and section. Attends mandatory in-services, maintains expectations for safety preparedness including but not limited to : Orientation to new equipment, Employee education event, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, etc.

Attends, contributes and participates in regularly scheduled departmental meetings. Assures all necessary patient documentation is complete and accurate by clearly writing required information on all necessary forms.

Participates in the quality and performance improvement activities, identifies new ways to improve workflow and the patient experience.

Manages patient flow effectively and minimizes delays by utilizing critical thinking to analyze and evaluate simple cause and effect outcomes.

Takes appropriate action to categorize problems into high and low priority levels and exercises action(s) to maintain efficiencies.

Coordinates patient flow through the department by maximizing resource allocation and communicating any problems to supervisor(s).

Complies with all Cherokee Nation Health Service policies and procedures to maintain equipment safety. Relays all equipment malfunctions to the appropriate team and supervisor with appropriate information readily available.

During system failure, performs department down time procedures and immediately reports failure to supervisor. Maintains his / her presence in the area and provides needed support to maximize department productivity.

Follows exams from start to finish through complete system to ensure exams reach archive / interpreting radiologist site.

Manages communications throughout the area and understands and participates in the importance of interrelationships between own unit’s employees and customer (Providers, Nursing, Patients) and how various teams as a whole contribute to the success of the facility.

Exhibits and maintains a high level of customer service and is respectful and professional at all times with staff, both internal and external to Cherokee Nation.

Listens when approached by others. Takes actions based on understanding of the message and asks appropriate questions to clarify if clarification is needed.

Reports monthly procedure totals to supervisor / director as directed. Participates in on-going learning activities and demonstrates application of it in his / her role.

Works with Students from approved educational institutions rotating through Cherokee Nation Radiology Department for a learning experience in a clinical setting.

Maintains verifiable records at an institution or facility that has a published records retention policy that is equal to or exceeds the retention required by federal, tribal and / or state regulations.

Maintains the confidentiality of any information received from any person or source about a client, unless authorized in writing by the client or required by law or court order.

Complies with the applicable state, tribal and federal regulations in regard to the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record created, maintained, transferred, or destroyed, whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium.
