Under general supervision, evaluates and codes patient charts and medical records to optimize reimbursement by ensuring that diagnostic codes, procedure codes and other documentation accurately reflect and support the patient condition and that data complies with legal standards and guidelines.
Codes patient charts for emergency, radiology, ambulatory surgery, inpatient treatment, observation and recurring conditions.
Interprets medical information such as disease or symptoms, and diagnostic descriptions and procedures in order to accurately assign and sequence the correct ICD-9-CM and CPT codes.
Maintains knowledge of billing procedures, reimbursement criteria and regulatory updates. Uses software to accurately and efficiently translate patient data in a timely manner.
Communicates regularly with ancillary departments and providers regarding code assignments and may provide technical guidance on coding issues.
QUALIFICATIONS : Education
Associate or bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management preferred. AHIMA accredited long distance coding courses may substitute.
Experience
Three years experience in coding medical records and billing processes using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding systems preferred.
Experience with healthcare information systems and data entry preferred.
Licensure / Credentials
RHIT, RHIA, CCS certified or certification eligible with demonstrated proficiency in ICD-9-CM coding systems. CPC-H certified or certification eligible with demonstrated proficiency in CPT coding guidelines and billing procedures for physicians and outpatient records.
Demonstrated proficiency in using electronic clinical abstracting systems with minimum typing speed of 55 wpm.
