Work environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with students, staff, and occasionally the public.
The employee is directly responsible for the safe and well-being of students and staff.
Role and Responsibilities
- Mandatory pre-trip inspection.
- Mechanical inspection including gasoline, oil and antifreeze levels, lights, tires and all warning devices.Confirm the status of all safety equipment needed including fire extinguishers, flares, first aid kit, reflectors, and broom.
- Immediately report, in writing, any defects to grounds and / or Director of Operations.
- Complete all special bus request reports at the conclusion of each trip and turn in to the transportation office.
- A bus driver involved in an accident must call the police to have an accident report made out. Furthermore, all accidents shall be reported to the transportation office.
- A bus driver is to maintain order and control of pupils on the bus while demonstrating responsible adult leadership.
- No school bus shall exceed the legal posted speed, including expressways. Observation is to be maintained in all posted areas, while appropriate speed will be exercised at all times during inclement weather.
- School bus will drop off or pick up pupils only at authorized stops.
- Driver is not to leave the bus running while unattended, please do not leave the key on the bus.
- Shall endeavor to maintain the assigned time schedule.
- Transport only authorized pupils.
- All emergency and first aid supplies shall be removed from the bus and locked in an assigned cabinet.
- School bus is to be swept out and made ready for next day use.
- Make certain that all switches are turned off, windows locked, and doors secured.
- Shall perform other such tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Operations.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid Michigan driver's license, and a safe driving record.
- Successfully passed the State of Michigan CDL road and written tests with P and S endorsements.
- Ability to pass MDOT physical examination.
Preferred Skills
- Ability to clearly communicate with students, staff and occasionally parents.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to remain in a stationary position up to 50% of the time.
The employee is required to occasionally climb up and down bus steps and may be required to climb in and out of the Rear Emergency Door.
The employee will assist in moving students on and off the bus and move student equipment weighing up to 75 lbs. The employee will frequently communicate with students and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
