Job Summary
The Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy (PMA) Division is one of six academic Divisions at Caltech. PMA conducts forefront theoretical and experimental research, with state-of-the-art laboratories in addition to office, conference, and teaching spaces.
The PMA Facility Lead will report to the Division Operations Officer (DOO) and will oversee all facilities-related needs within the Division.
PMA has labs across multiple buildings that conduct forefront research in astrophysics, cosmology, quantum sciences, precision measurement, high energy particle physics, and condensed matter physics.
These custom laboratories have a range of environmental and facility requirements. This individual in this role will be actively engaged in working with Caltech researchers, division staff and central facilities to develop, manage and maintain PMA’s labs and other facilities.
Essential Job Duties
- Work with new faculty to develop requirements for new laboratories.
- Work with division leadership to identify appropriate sites for new labs and lab expansions.
- Coordinate with Caltech facilities to develop implementation plans that meet research requirements within acceptable cost and schedule constraints.
- Work with faculty to develop requirements and plans for laboratory expansions and renovations.
- Work with Caltech central facilities to ensure implementation of plans within allocated budget and schedule constraints.
- Oversee maintenance of facilities and infrastructure (renovations and new laboratory development) projects in the Division.
- Coordinate the efforts to recycle, reuse, and maintain facilities, equipment, and furniture on a Division-wide basis.
- Lead the development of annual facilities renewal requests to the Institute, working under the direction of the DOO and with central facilities.
- Serve as primary contact for the division with Physical Plant, Security and Safety departments on all matters of maintenance and repair.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years' experience in laboratory management and / or similar functions in an academic or industry research laboratory.
- Experience with project planning and management.
- Experience with laboratory design, renovation, and maintenance.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and initiative.
- Ability to identify opportunities and implement improved productivity and use of resources; takes initiative to improve work processes.
- Ability to interact professionally with various levels of Institute management and / or faculty, as well as outside contacts and collaborators.
- Team player with a positive, willing attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- Be a licensed Architect or registered Engineer in California.
- Caltech facilities knowledge and experience, or experience in a similar, demanding experimental research environment.
- FEMA emergency response training.

Hiring Range
$100,000 - $115,000 Per Year
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
