Summary :
Under supervision, the incumbent of this position providesprofessional nursing care to clinic patients. Works collaborativelywith the providers within the team setting to facilitate qualitycare for the patient.
Responsibilities :
- Performs general nursing care to patients.Administers treatments in accordance with nursingstandards.
- Assists with the preparation ofequipment and aids provider during treatment, examination, andtesting of patients.
- Observes, records, andreports patients’ condition and reaction to drugs or treatments toproviders.
- Oversees appointment bookings andensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.Maintains timely flow of patients.
- Greetspatients and obtains well-documented history and vitals. Preparespatients for physical exam. Instructs patients in collection ofsamples and tests.
- May perform the followingtasks in accordance with established procedures and as prescribedby applicablelicensure / certification :
- Obtain / recordvital signs; perform initial assessment on patient; coordinatepatient transfer to hospital and / or discharge;
- give telephoneorders; accept telephone test results; perform telephone triage;call in provider approved prescription refills;
- specimen collectionincluding stool and urine midstream; catheterizepatient; indwelling catheter urinecollection; obtain throat culture;
- pregnancytesting; administer urine dip; obtain wound culture; performSnellen vision screening; eye injury management; administeroptic / otic meds;
- assist withlumbar punctures ; sputum collection; occult bloodtesting; assist with vaginal exam; teach crutch / cane walking;
- teachuse of walker; apply Velcro splint; assist with plaster splint;apply moist heat and / or cold packs; administer enema;
- remove fecalimpaction; administer oxygen;teach respiratory hygiene; administerchest physiotherapy; perform oral suction and / or infant suctionbulb;
- wound care; apply sterile dressing; assist with circumcision;perform umbilical care; apply colloidal dressing; open steriletray;
apply topical medications; administer rectal and / or vaginalmedications; give oral medications; and,give sublingual medications to adultsand / or pediatricpatients.
- May performthe following tasks only ifappropriate training has beenobtained :
- Blood collectionby lancet; pulse oximetry; incentive Spirometry; suture and / orstaple removal; ear irrigation; administer breathing treatment;
- give allergy / insulin / immunization medications to adult and / orpediatric patients; give intramuscular and / or subcutaneousinjections to adult and / or pediatric patients;
give injections Ztrack to adult patients.
- May perform the following tasks after providing verification ofcompletion of specialtraining :
- Blood collectionvenipuncture; audiometry exam; Titmus vision screening; EKG;administer electrical stimulation; assist / processbiopsies;
draw blood from portocath ; assistendoscopy, start saline lock or IV fluids and monitor IVfluids.
- May administerIV push medications and / or add medications to IV only aftercompletion of special trainingand only under direct supervision oflicensed practitioner.
- May make arrangementsfor patient testing and admissions.
- May berequired to have a working knowledge of ICD9, CPT and HCPCS codingand managed care.
- Responds to incomingtelephone calls and (per provider instructions) calls in refillsand prescriptions to pharmacy.
- Per providerand / or established protocol, instructs patients and / or family withregard to medication and treatment and documents thesame.
- Formulates and updates patient careplans. Orders, prepares, and inspects patient charts. Posts testsand examination results.
Reviews patient’s tests and examinationresults with provider; documents instructions and notifiespatient.
- Maintains patient files, records andother information in a professional manner following policies andprocedures regarding documentation.
- Ensurespreparation of exam rooms including re-stocking of treatmentareas.
- Attends required meetings andparticipates in committees as requested.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintainsprofessional licensure and affiliations.
- Follows the CHRISTUS Health guidelines related to the HealthInsurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), designed toprevent or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected HealthInformation (PHI).
- Maintains strictconfidentiality.
- Uses oral and writtencommunication skills to effectively convey ideas in a clear,positive manner that is consistent with the CHRISTUSMission.
- Maintains established CHRISTUS Healthpolicies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety,environmental and infection control.

Education / Skills
Graduate from an accredited school of practicalnursing or vocational nursing.
Experience
Previous medical office experiencepreferred.
Licenses,Registrations, or Certifications
- Valid state license to practicenursing.
- Current BLS certification through theAmerican Heart Association or the American RedCross
