Position : Public Works Streets Technician I or II

Department : Public Works

Hourly Pay Range : D.O.E. (Technician I $23.17 - $31.28) or (Technician II $25.49 - $34.41)

Reports to : Public Works Supervisor

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES : The Technician performs skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of various infrastructure, including streets, multi-use paths, sidewalks, bridges, roadsides, drainage systems, and signage.

In an entry-level position, the incumbents receive training to develop skills and proficiency in all duties required of a journey-level position.

Drives a Town vehicle in the normal course of business. All employees are required to perform work in a manner consistent with and exemplary per the Town of Severance’s core values of TOWN PRIDE philosophies and the Town’s Equal Opportunity Employment policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs a variety of duties that requires considerable knowledge of the use and wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Assists, performs, and / or directs a variety of routine to complex maintenance and construction activities, or inspections including street signage, street sweeping, pavement markings, concrete maintenance, and asphalt maintenance.
  • Operates heavy and light duty equipment to perform related maintenance and construction assignments such as front-end loader, dump truck, motor grader, sweeper, skid steer, backhoe, and snowplow.
  • Performs a variety of heavy laboring activities including the use of hand tools, light power equipment, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Performs routine safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment and maintains records of activities.
  • Fabricates, installs, and maintains a variety of specialized and complex equipment such as traffic data collection devices, traffic signal equipment, and school zone speed awareness signs and performs light mechanical repair and maintenance.
  • Performs data entry of information, maintenance logs, and other data in spreadsheets and pavement management software.
  • Maintains a safe working environment including working in traffic and congested areas, working in ditches and confined spaces, and in all work environments.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Prepares necessary records and reports.
  • Assists in the cleaning and organization of the shop area.
  • Performs snow removal activities either by hand, with small equipment, or heavy equipment as assigned.
  • Must be able to work on-call schedule as assigned.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or general education degree with course work in math and science is required.

Two years of related working experience preferred.

  • Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license
  • Public Works Technician Streets Technician I : Flagger Certification within a year of hire, Permit-Required Confined Space Certification within a year of hire, Valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B and good driving record.
  • Public Works Technician Streets Technician II : Flagger Certification, Permit-Required Confined Space Certification, Valid Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B with tanker endorsement or higher, Possess an LTAP Road Scholar I Certification.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to job responsibilities.
  • Ability to work in stressful situations, under time constraints, and in a team environment.
  • Must maintain a good motor vehicle driving record. Aptitude for operating tools and equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Ability to perform moderate / heavy physical work, to lift 75 pounds, and to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, ride, climb, bend, crawl, twist, reach, kneel, grasp, push, pull, and perform a variety of similar body movements.
  • Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone, and by two-way radio; ability to hear equipment and malfunctions.
  • Ability to see and read instructions, manuals, electric dials and gauges, and similar documents.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

This position is primarily working for the Streets Division within Public Works; however, cross-training and other duties may be assigned such as :

  • Work in and around underground utilities.
  • Manual digging and excavating
  • Upkeep and cleaning of all Town facilities and restrooms.
  • Make repairs to and maintains Town buildings; perform janitorial work; set up for meetings; move furniture.
  • Assisting Meters with reading and maintenance, service orders, conducting turn-offs and turn-ons of residential and commercial water services.
  • Assisting Distribution, Collections, and Storm Operations with the maintenance of sanitary sewer, water, and storm-related items.
  • Assisting Locates with utility locates.
  • Assisting in Town events preparation, operation, and breakdown

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.

HOURS OF WORK

Regular working hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 7 : 00 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.m., and outside of regular work hours as necessary.

Summer hours may apply (4 days of a work week of 10-hour shifts). On-call rotation required.
