Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Registered Nurse / Licensed Practical Nurse / Pre-Admissions to join our team!

JOB SUMMARY :

The Pre-Admission nurse will phone patients prior surgery to obtain a thorough and comprehensive medical history from them, give pre-op instructions, initiate pre-op teaching and clarify the patient’s understanding of the procedure, intended anesthetic approach, expected outcomes and personal responsibilities.

They must work in concert with the Scheduling Clerk for optimum utilization of the schedule, suites, personnel and equipment.

They must be alert for potential problems encountered during the interview and handle them appropriately. They will at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with patients, colleagues, and supervisors.

Please note benefits are based on eligibility according to full-time, part-time or PRN status classification.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Title : or LPN Pre-Admission :

1. Contact patients prior to surgery.

2. Identify scheduling and patient problems or special needs as you look at the

schedule and prepare for calls. Specific items you should watch for :

a. Clarify any possible question regarding the type of procedure the surgeon

has scheduled.

b. Patient’s needing pre-op medications, lab work and specifics for MRSA.

c. In appropriate patients due to medical complications, social problems, etc.

d. Will the patient have a ride home, adult companion, appropriate equipment,

supplies and medications for postoperative care.

e. Will the patient be able to make the follow-up visit with the doctor.

f. Does the patient seem to understand the pre- and postoperative instructions.

3. Check updated schedule for added cases. Confirm arrival and surgery times.

4. Fill out a new pre-admit Form for any cases that were added.

5. Check updated printouts. Double check surgery time that was given to patient at

time of interview. If time has changed, recall patient and give the new time. Place a

check mark and initial below the new time to indicate that the patient has been

notified.

6. Information for each patient can be obtained from the Surgery Schedule program.

Fill in every blank on the Pre-Admit Form!

a. Verify correct spelling of name and whether there is a middle initial. If the

name seems to be abbreviated or a nick-name, ask for full name.

b. If the patient says they have been here before, verify what name they were

using at the time.

7. Take completed charts to pre-op the day before surgery-sometime before mid

afternoon.

8. Call back the patients you have not been able to contact. If unable to reach patient

at home or work, call the surgeon’s office and request they check their files for

another number, an emergency number or other contact person. Call this number to

see if they can assist you in reaching the patient.

9. Prepare Pre-Admit Form for calls the next day. Patient information can be obtained

in Scheduling Program on the computer.

10. Demonstrate skills in interpersonal relationships with patients, their families or

significant others, and co-workers.

a. Recognize the need to establish rapport with patients and their families,

thereby being effective in the process of patient teaching.

b. Recognize the needs of patient’s family and others associated with him / her.

c. Cooperate in lending knowledge and / or assistance to co-workers to expedite

patient care in all aspects of scheduling process.

d. Demonstrate a functional rapport with co-workers, anesthesiologists, patients

and their families.

11. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate suggestions and criticism objectively, and

wherever necessary undertake to change behavior or seek further guidance.

a. Demonstrate personal responsibility for maintaining an unquestionable

attendance and leave record.

b. Utilize education resources of the facility.

12. Maintain a responsible attitude toward appropriate and efficient management of the

facility.

a. Continually strive to provide care in the most cost-efficient manner possible.

b. Respond to the needs of other departments during periods of conflict and in

the process of resolving mutual problems.

c. Always extend courtesy and an attitude of cooperation while communication

with other.

d. Support facility policy and assists in the process of policy change.

e. Demonstrate a loyalty to the philosophy, policies and practices of the

institution.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION :

Education / Certification : : Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Licensure as a Registered Nurse or LPN in the state of Idaho. Current BLS required.

Experience : Background in medical / surgical nursing required.

Equipment / Technology : Computer experience required.

Language / Communication : Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Good phone skills.

Mathematical Skills : General high school math.

Mental Capabilities : Can frequently and consistently make sound judgments.

Interpersonal : See under job description.

Performance : Can work well under pressure and meet multiple and competing deadlines.
