Primary Purpose

In conjunction with SDG&E's Wildfire Mitigation Program (WMP), this position will integrate a wide range of data examination and investigation techniques that will be used to examine existing and new WMP programs and initiatives.

This examination will result in the development of trends and further analysis to determine the viability of the current WMP projects and initiatives and provide a platform for continuous enhancement as well as development of new initiatives.

The Data Scientist will also partner with the appropriate operating unit experts to identify program metrics and measures, assess and secure relevant data, perform quantified data analytics, develop alternative strategies and corresponding impacts, align recommended solutions with overall wildfire mitigation strategies, implement solutions based on quantifiable results, and implement and maintain process and tools that drive outcomes into future assessments.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • This position will integrate a wide range of data examination and investigation techniques to SDG&E's wildfire mitigation program to show efficacy and value of the current programs and initiatives contained in the wildfire mitigation plan.
  • Responsible in helping operating teams achieve operating objectives and advance the utility's footprint in Wildfire Mitigation.
  • This position will work with operating area experts to refine program metrics and measures, assess and validate relevant data, perform data analytics, develop alternative program and initiative strategies, and recommend alternate solutions to improve and augment the overall wildfire mitigation plan.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to identify and solve a variety of problems and to clarify Wildfire Mitigation Programs objectives, policies, strategies and challenges.
  • Builds and fosters external alliances to maintain up to date knowledge of industry-related issues in Wildfire Mitigation analytics.
  • Develops and delivers dashboards, reports and presentations on Wildfire Mitigation Programs performance against risk informed metrics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

QualificationsRequired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree In Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Business, related field, or equivalent training and / or experience in large data examination.
  • 8 years - Experience with data analysis, examination, development, including some experience with tabular and time series data manipulation and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, data warehouse and design, SQL Server Reporting Systems, Business Intelligence, financial or analytic statement analysis, machine learning and effective data mining.
  • Solid understanding of basic statistical concepts, trends and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Cognos Business Intelligence and Power Business Intelligence.
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to translate complex analysis into clear and effective management communications.
  • Must be willing to participate as needed in Emergency Operations Center (EOC) activations at any hour.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Business or related field.
  • Data warehousing.
  • Data mining using APIs or building ETL pipelines.
  • Tableau and Data Visualization / Storytelling.
  • Data cleansing using programming languages such as Python and R.
  • JAVA, Scala, SQL, Matlab and other similar analytical and problem-solving tools.
  • Developing Big Data infrastructures using Hadoop, and Spark and tools such as Pig and Hive.
  • Data modeling.
  • Statistical analysis using machine learning algorithms such as natural language processing, logistic regression or AI.
  • Creating programming and automation techniques, such as libraries, that simplify day-to-day processes using tools like TensorFlow to develop and train machine learning model.
  • Solid understanding of electric utility distribution and transmission.
  • Database query abilities using Toad.
  • Experience with cloud-based data model development / solution.
  • Experience with Power BI dashboards.
  • Familiarity with SAP HANA.
