New Grad MSHS ED Fellowship Program

Purpose : The MSHS ED New Graduate Fellowship Program is to expand the pool of recruitment potential for placement in the Emergency Department now that legal restrictions have been lifted by the New York State Department of Health Section 405.

New graduates have been successful hires in other nursing specialties for years such as OR, Critical Care and L&D. Since Covid 19, both recruitment and retention has been challenged in all areas of nursing practice so innovative programs such as this one are critical to maintain the necessary input of talented nurses into a very high acute area of practice that cannot sustain any aspects of a shortage of staffing.

Census within the MSHS remains high and the acute and chronic needs of our patients’ post the 2020 onset of Covid are continuous and demanding.

Curriculum : The MSHS ED New Graduate Residency Program will include :

  • Simulation
  • Clinical rotations through ICU, inpatient unit, EMS, and pediatrics
  • Completion of the Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO) modules
  • In-person / zoom courses, including a 2-day cardiac dysrhythmia course
  • Debriefing opportunities with peers and nursing leadership
  • Weekly meetings with preceptor and nursing education

Program Outline : approximately 24 weeks

Program Evaluation : To be completed after each part of the orientation process and will include one final evaluation at the completion of the program.

Requirements :

  • BLS / BCLS and ACLS / PALS certifications required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing / BSN required for all Clinical RN positions Exception : Associate Degree or Diploma in Nursing graduates considered for identified specialized areas of practice;

Current matriculation in a BSN program with graduation date within one year of hire is required for consideration

Current New York State Registered Nurse / RN license (or willingness and eligibility to obtain)
