Salary / Grade : EXS / 14

Target hiring range for this position will be between $175,000-$210,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Job Summary :

The Director of Project Management will manage multiple related teams of managers and professionals responsible for the capital projects delivery process, from the design phase through commissioning and close-out.

Provides day to day business operational oversight of financial, budget, contracting and scheduling for all capital projects.

Is responsible for managing the design and construction of physical assets and bringing them online in the most efficient and economical manner.

Please note : Requires frequent visits to active construction sites including climbing ladders / stairs, navigating through work site conditions, and long periods of standing / walking.

Specific Responsibilities :

  • Manages project management staff throughout the life cycle of the project.
  • Assists project managers in defining program, budgets, schedule, negotiating contracts, securing building permits, delivery of materials and equipment and ensuring that projects run on time and within budget.
  • Evaluates capital project request for feasibility, and prepares preliminary budget, cash flow, schedule, and project delivery recommendations.
  • Liaison to the Building Departments of Chicago / Evanston, and other related agencies.
  • Serves as Facilities representative to one or more schools or major units (such as The Pritzker Law School, Feinberg Medical School, and Kellog).
  • Develops staff to improve technical and managerial skills, identify, and correct areas of program execution weakness through training and mentoring.
  • Provides oversight of project budgets, master schedules, and coordinates value engineering exercises with supported customers to maintain both program and budget.
  • Develops and provides timely quantitative and qualitative information to support decision making as well as broad awareness of construction projects, including schedule, budget, board materials, and routine management metrics.
  • Accountable for RFP process and award of design and construction professionals.
  • Manages relationships with architects and constructors to ensure that Northwestern's interests are best served, and goals are achieved.
  • Responsible for reporting up to senior director capital programs ensuring projects are managed appropriately, completed within budget and on schedule through adherence of defined processes and procedures.
  • Ensures Northwestern business diversity goals for construction projects are met.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, architecture, or construction management plus ten (10) years of relevant experience in professional practice or related job discipline.
  • Detailed understanding of building systems, construction practices, contracting procedures and building design methodologies.
  • Experience in design and construction administration, technical development, contract preparation, and financial administration.
  • Strong supervision and management skills.
  • Experience in managing direct reports.

Minimum Competencies : (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Proven track record of successful management of capital construction projects.
  • Expertise in urban / vertical construction.
  • Thorough knowledge of current building codes and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a team environment, build coalitions, and communicate effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff population.
  • Proven analytical, communication, and organization skills as well as an ability to self-motivate, multitask, and work in a fast paced environment under deadlines.
  • Must be detail orientated, while maintaining big picture vision of the project.

Preferred Qualifications :

Professional Registration in Architecture or Engineering. Masters Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or Business.

  • Experience in higher education design and construction.
  • Experience in managing business functions.
