Purpose of Position

The primary role of a program support teacher (PST) for Technical Assistance and Professional Development - General is to provide planning, organization, technical assistance, facilitation of group meetings and training to central office, school personal, parents and others as appropriate on a variety of special education and related areas.

In addition, the PSTs assigned to general technical assistance and professional development will serve in a variety of other support roles assisting administration with the operations of the Division of Special Education.

To facilitate the effective and efficient use of staff resources to carry out these technical assistance and professional development functions, PSTs assigned to general support will work collaboratively with the other technical assistance and professional development PSTs in the areas of autism, assistive technology, OT / PT, early childhood, speech and language, VI and HI to coordinate services, supports, and training through regular scheduled team meetings or involvement on project teams.

Examples of Primary Responsibilities and Duties :

Specific responsibilities of the Technical Assistance and Professional Development may include the following :

Supports the development of district policy, procedures and best practices related to state and federal special education law, assists with development of related procedures and forms.

Provides on-going training for new and returning staff regarding recent interpretations of IDEA requirements and subsequent changes in local policies and procedures.

Coordinates orientation activities for new special education teachers.

Provide training and technical assistance to all special education and related services staff in the use of the electronic eIDEA system.

Coordinates on-going training opportunities for school-based special education staff in response to school, division, or district priorities.

Coordinates and facilitates on-going training opportunities for PSTs.

Under the direction of special education administration, conducts school-initiated requests for support and training in special education processes and interventions.

Serves as liaison and collaborator with professional development staff from other departments specific to shared interventions, professional learning offerings, and ordering materials.

Participates as assigned on District level committees or division level, project teams and program and staff development work groups.

Serves as division liaison with external professional development personnel associated with organizations such as UW-Madison, CESA, DPI, etc...

Maintains department web pages including information located on the professional learning team website.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications :

The program support teacher for general technical assistance and professional development general shall meet all the following minimal qualifications :

Minimum of 3 years successful experience as a Special Education Teacher. Program Support Teacher experience is desired.

Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience designing and implementing professional development and technical assistance that reflects current research and best practices.

Successful experience developing and providing teacher and / or family training opportunities.

Evidence of competencies in the following areas : development and evaluation of assistive technology devices and services, communication and collaboration with teams;

communication development and augmentation; assistive technology; inclusionary practices; and providing technical assistance to teams.

Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrates the effective use of computerized programs, technology and corresponding programs specific to IDEA.

Bachelor’s degree. Official transcripts are required for formal employment.

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) teaching license in Special Education.

  • Applications are considered on a rolling basis. MMSD must first consider applicants who are fully licensed before considering applicants who are not yet licensed.
  • If you do not already have an active Wisconsin teaching license, you must obtain and maintain the necessary license(s) for the position.

An application must be on file within 30 days of starting your employment with MMSD. Failure to do so will result in your contract being voided.

The district does not provide financial support for the continued education that is required to achieve the certification.

The district does not select or endorse any particular certification program that leads to the required Wisconsin teaching license.

An unlicensed candidate can be considered, but they must be hired by a school district in order to apply for a One-Year License with Stipulations with DPI.
