Director of Research Operations (Facility Operations Leader), Herman B. Wells Center for Pediatric Research

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as building operations manager for the Wells Center for Pediatric Research, with headquarters located in the Cancer Research Building (R4)
  • Charged with monitoring the day-to-day activities and staff of all the Wells research facilities, providing training to lab staff as needed, and assuring compliance with safety policies and other regulatory compliance
  • Manages laboratory operations of the Wells buildings and coordinate and facilitate communications with internal and external customers regarding building operations
  • Provides support to all Wells research faculty and staff. Coordinates activities of shared core facilities and monitors the use of these facilities for research projects
  • Assists the investigators in conducting research requiring expertise in the application and adaptation of selected research techniques, equipment, and procedures
  • Supervises research staff during use of core facilities
  • Participates in protocol development, data analysis and report preparation
  • Maintains fiscal accountability of the program and approves expenditures for the core laboratories
  • Responsible for quality assurance, proper documentation (including SOPs for core laboratories), reporting and record keeping related to all common shared equipment and space including that required by institutional oversight committees (i.e., IACUC and IRB)
  • Conducts regular meetings with lab representatives in the Wells Center to discuss various issues in common laboratory operation and responsibilities

General Responsibilities

Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define Facility Operations methodologies and standards;

provides direction and guidance on high priority Facility Operations projects / initiatives

  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines / deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project / multi-phase Facility Operations initiatives
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal
  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of engineering resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments / areas / teams;

may coordinate large-scale Facility Operations projects with a wide audiences in support of academic initiatives

  • Makes budgetary recommendations / proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry Facility Operations standards, procedures, technologies, and safety measures;

responsible for the implementation of new protocols / procedures to address business needs

  • Works collaboratively with other Facility Operations leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies / procedures
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees;

serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to Facility Operations

EDUCATION

Required

Bachelor's degree in business, inventory management, controls, facilities management, or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 4 years in business, inventory management, controls, facilities management, or related field
  • 1 year of management experience in relevant field

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment.

This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend / descend ladders / stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self;

discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

$98,500 - $108,500 based on a combination of experience, skill level, education, and training.
