Position Summary

The Opportunity : Skagit Valley College (SVC) invites applications for a Cashier 2. Under general supervision of the Accounting Manager, this position will follow established guidelines and procedures and exercise independent judgement in the performance of assigned tasks to perform as the primary cashier.

This position utilizes a complex automated system to process receipt of payments for tuition and fees, prepares receipts, makes adjustments to funds, maintains records, and prepares bank deposits.

The successful candidate will demonstrate efficiency, timeliness and accuracy.

This is a 100% of full-time, classified position at the Business Office located at our campus in Mount Vernon, WA.

There are up to two vacancies for this position.

The Location : Skagit Valley College is on the traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish People’s, especially on Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Upper Skagit Indian Tribe, Samish Indian Nation, Nooksack Indian Tribe, and Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe.

Located in a geographically diverse region between the dynamic metropolitan hubs of Seattle and Vancouver, BC, SVC is never far from world-class outdoor recreation, urban arts scenes, and local cultural events.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive cash, checks and / or credit card payments for various transactions;
  • Record all tuition and other revenue receipts in the computerized financial management system (FMS);
  • Maintain, balance and replenish individually assigned cash drawer for Skagit Valley College (SVC);
  • Issue computerized, or manual, receipts for payments received;
  • Verify, consolidate and balance cash receipts records each day;
  • Prepare daily bank deposit;
  • Verify and disburses petty cash funds;
  • Make cash and accounting adjustments;
  • Maintain cashiering / refund records;
  • Compute fees and prepare computer input documents;
  • Operate terminals as required in cashiering function;
  • Receive deposits from other college departments for preparation of total bank deposits;
  • May process student refunds;
  • Respond to requests for information from students, faculty, staff and visitors;
  • Collect and organize data on electronic spreadsheets;
  • Assist with collection of NSF Checks;
  • Maintain security procedures and internal controls to ensure safety of funds;
  • Ensure compliance with established cash management processes and provide input to enhance security procedures for the cashiering office;
  • Assist as requested in preparing for the new ERP / financial management system. Participate in training and implementation of software, including providing assistance to department / project management staff and coverage during system implementation;
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality;
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Knowledge or understanding of :

  • Skagit Valley College policies and procedures;
  • State and Federal laws affecting Skagit Valley College;
  • Knowledge of cashiering and bookkeeping procedures involving receipt of funds, adjusting and transferring funds, and recording transactions.

Ability to :

  • Effectively provide great customer service;
  • Accurately handle, count and balance money;
  • Ability to enter information and complete detail work with a very high degree of accuracy using the college's integrated computerized systems;
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite (excel), e-mail, internet and search engines;
  • Communicate orally and in writing in English;
  • Effective communication skill in working with populations having diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds and persons with physical and / or learning disabilities;
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality;
  • Act as an effective communication link and reliable source of information to others; Responsibly and accurately handle the public's money when processing financial transactions and consistently follow applicable fiscal guidelines, regulations, principles and standards;
  • Apply practical accounting techniques;
  • Recognize when mathematical calculations are incorrect and correct errors; Use critical thinking, reasoning and experience to make sound decisions;
  • Plan and manage time efficiently. Successfully meet deadlines to ensure continued delivery of services;
  • Accept personal responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work. Produce accurate results with little need for oversight;
  • Adapt easily to changing business needs, conditions and work responsibilities;
  • Work in a team environment.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications :

  • High School graduation or equivalent;
  • Eighteen months of fiscally-related work such as bank teller or retail sales clerk.
  • Equivalent education / experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting or related field;
  • Cash Handling Experience; Strong customer service skills;
  • Experience in Washington State Higher Education;
  • Education and / or experience in governmental or non-profit accounting;
  • Knowledge of Washington State Technical and Community College's accounting systems and procedures.

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary is based on Range 32, Step A, $2,889 per month with periodic increments to $3,728 per month. Starting salary may be dependent on education, qualifications, and experience.

Salary and benefits are subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.

  • This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
