Summary :
Assumes primary responsibility and 24 / 7 accountability foreffective implementation of nursing practice and operations forassigned areas;
at CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital. The nurse manageraffects departmental outcomes through interpretation,implementation, and evaluation of hospital and departmentalphilosophy, goals, policies, and procedures.
Facilitates intra andinterdepartmental communication and collaboration to promoteexcellence in patient care, patient experience and patientoutcomes.
Effectively manages utilization of staff and materialresources so that the most therapeutically effective patient careis provided in a safe and cost effective manner.
Promotes theprofessional development of patient care and administrative supportstaff assigned for areas.
Responsibilities :
- Participates in the establishment andimplementation of yearly goals for the units.
- Monitors operations of the unit. Measures progress towards goals,identifying problems and taking correctiveactions.
- Serves as an advocate forpatients / families, assuring that patient / family rights arerespected, patient satisfaction issues are addressed, andassociates adhere to the core values of thecorporation.
- Directs patient care incompliance with regulatory standards such as Joint Commission andstate licensure requirements.
- Participates inthe development, communication, and implementation of nursing andorganizational policy and procedure.
- Participates on intra and interdepartmental committees and taskforces which are focused on improving patientcare.
- Collaborates with other DepartmentManagers and Hospital Leadership to resolve unit / staffissues.
- Participates and directs staff inhospital plans for emergency and disasters.
- Develops, communicates and updates unit(s), standards, protocols,policies and procedures to meet trends in nursing practice andpatient services.
- Collaborates with HumanResources to recruit and hire qualifiedassociates.
- Counsels, guides, and disciplinesassociates to enhance patient care through compliance withestablished hospital policies and procedures.
- Evaluates staff job performance on a timely basis and in a mannerthat recognizes associate's accomplishments, enhances performanceand facilitates professional development.
- Provides HR with information to maintain associate files withcurrent licensure, credentialing records, certifications,orientation documentation, skills checklists, and continuingeducation requirements.
- Facilitates andencourages staff participation in the professional practicemodel.
- Confronts and resolves conflictsinvolving staff, physicians, patients / families, interdepartmentaland intra departmental issues.
- Empowersassociates through effective delegation, maintainingaccountability.
- Directs and ensures staffparticipation in process improvement activities for theunit / hospital.
- Conducts regularly scheduledstaff meetings which address unit issues, process improvement, andsafety; Ensures staff meeting minutes are available on a timelybasis.
- Establishes and enforces with staff amethod for ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the unit supplies andequipment.
- Maintains and ensures documentationof quality control aspects of the clinic(s) (e. g. POCT logs,refrigerator temps, etc which are required by JointCommission)
- Collaborates effectively withphysicians, administrators, patients, families, other departments,and the community to provide quality patient care and enhancepatient outcomes.
- Maintains core staffingwithin established guidelines that assure patient safety andconsiders skill mix and experience of staff.
- Oversees daily staffing of the unit and collaborates with LeadAssociates on the development and revision of the staffingschedule.
- Ensures assessment of competency ofall associates as a part of the orientation program and on anongoing basis.
- Identifies, plans, developsand / or arranges for programs to meet the educational / skills needsof the associates upon hiring and on an ongoingbasis.
- Identifies, plans, develops methods tomeet the educational needs of the patientpopulation.
- On an annual basis, contributes tothe development of operating and capital budgets to meet the needsof the unit.
- Assures effective and appropriateutilization of material and human resources,
- Reviews financial and productivity management reports and takesappropriate actions.
- Demonstrates competenceto perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner thatmeets the age specific and developmental needs of patients servedby the department.
- Appropriately reviewspatient assessment, treatment, and / or care methods performed bynursing to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural,spiritual, age specific and other developmental needs of eachpatient served.
