Overview
The incumbent's primary responsibilities are in the performance of Computerized Tomographic (CT) examinations. Independently performs computerized tomography of the head, neck spine, chest, body, and extremities. These exams may be performed with the use of contrast materials. Operates independently and without direct supervision in the performance of computerized tomography examinations and special procedures.
Responsibilities
- Schedules exams in a manner to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. This requires the ability to prioritize scheduled patients as well as accommodate emergency patients needing immediate surgery or other urgent care.
- Confers with radiologists to determine requirements of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number, and thickness of scans to meet CT scanning requirements. Schedules patients for examinations. Advises radiologists or referring physicians of examination results. Notifies them of scans requiring immediate attention. Ensures all images and related series are transmitted to PACS upon completion.
- Performs CT angiography studies per protocols and reconstructs CT angiography images when requested or as part of standard procedures.
- Maintains routine monitoring and stocking of CT supplies to ensure optimal inventory levels.
- Adheres to infection control and safety policies, sterile technique, handling of supplies, attire, hand hygiene, and continuing education.
- Works with radiologists as part of the radiology team. Assists and anticipates radiologists' needs, demonstrates situational awareness of patient condition, examination protocols, equipment operability, safety measures, and emergency procedures.
- Prepares contrast materials for CT exams. Possesses understanding of contrast usage, monitors patient condition for adverse reactions, and is certified to insert IV needles for contrast administration when necessary.
- Follows credentialing standards and safety regulations, including ARRT certification requirements and CPR recertification per guidelines, and complies with applicable public laws and VA standards.
- Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self using lead protection, shielding, collimation, dose monitoring, and daily QA. Wears film badges in compliance with regulations.
- Accurately identifies patient images and verifies patient identity with at least two identifiers (name and full date of birth or SSN).
- Explains exam indications, preparation, and contraindications to patients, and obtains informed consent for interventional procedures when applicable.
- Maintains records of exams, correctly registering and editing in the information system, and distributing images to PACS, CD, or film as required.
- Participates in continuing education and quality improvement to provide high-quality imaging for diagnostic use.
- Performs Quality Assurance testing and related documentation as assigned.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when recruitment goals require, per VA guidelines.Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by ARRT (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for CT duties. On-the-job training may be provided where appropriate under supervision.Education. Completion of a full-time 24-month diagnostic radiologic technology program accredited by JRCERT or recognized equivalent.Credentialing Standards. Must meet credentialing standards under Public Law 97-35 and 42 CFR Part 75; be certified as radiographers and maintain certification.Loss of Credential. Failure to obtain or maintain required certification may lead to removal from the occupation.Physical Requirements. See VA directives and handbooks for details.English Language Proficiency. Proficient in spoken and written English as required by law.Grade Requirements.
Background on Experience and Assignments : At least one year of related radiologic technology experience; advanced assignments may include CT, MRI, interventional radiology, PACS, or QA duties as described in the job standards.
