Safety Director

The Louisiana Special School District is seeking applicants for a Safety Director. This is an Unclassified Full-time position. The Safety Director will be responsible for overseeing safety for the Special School District campus in Baton Rouge and any other sites or entities where work is performed by SSD employees. This position is responsible for erecting and operationalizing the policies, people and processes demanded by maintaining security and safety in the school district. This position reports to the Operations Executive Director but has a "direct dotted line" relationship with the Superintendent.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Science or other related fields.

Preferred Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or other relevant certifications.

Key Skills :

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations or other relevant safety standards is essential.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to train and engage employees; American Sign Language (ASL) is acceptable but not required.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a solid understanding of risk principles to mitigate risks and hazards.

Job Duties and Other Information

Responsibilities :

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety and security plans, emergency operations plans, and policies for the SSD.
  • Develop and implement school behavioral threat assessment policies, procedures, and training and assessment teams.
  • Conduct risk assessments and identify potential safety hazards.
  • Provide training to school personnel on safety and security procedures. Works directly with the Security staff on proper procedure and protocol, especially in the event of emergencies.
  • Manage and maintain all safety equipment, including security cameras, alarms, and other safety technology.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and emergency response teams, state and local officials to develop emergency response plans.
  • Coordinate with school administrators to develop procedures for handling disruptive behavior, student discipline, and crises.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all safety-related concerns and emergencies.
  • Monitor and analyze safety trends and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety incidents and responses.
  • Works with the Office of Risk Management and Sedgewick in reporting, investigating, reviewing and determining appropriate information for claims, incidents, accidents, etc.
  • Works with agency personnel to ensure safety in transporting students in / out of the campus and residential areas in the event of weather emergencies.
  • Ensure that all students and staff follow protocol and safety guidelines in a shelter-in-place event at the SSD.
  • Develop procedures to provide notification to proper individuals when safety measures are in operation, i.e., notification to parents, guardians, general public, other agencies, etc.
  • Directs, administers and is the point of contact for the Office of Risk Management (ORM) Safety Program and ensures district supervisor compliance with program policies including : general safety, driver safety, bonds, crime and property, fleet management, and equipment management programs.
  • Confirms program components are compliant and in accordance with Office of Risk Management guidelines.
