PCOM offers a wide range of direct services, including healthcare, counseling, educational programs, and advocacy. These services address the various challenges faced by the SGM community, ensuring access to resources necessary for leading healthy, fulfilling lives.

PCOM also hosts numerous events, including the annual Pride festival, which attracts up to 150,000 participants, promoting cultural affirmation and social justice.

By fostering a supportive environment, PCOM empowers individuals to embrace their identities with pride, striving to eliminate barriers that prevent SGM individuals from reaching their full potential.

Job Description

The Licensed Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist at the Pride Center of Maryland (PCOM) plays a crucial role in improving the health and well-being of diverse LGBTQ / SGL youth and adult populations.

This position involves developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive substance abuse prevention programs that address the unique behavioral, mental, and physical health needs of these communities.

The specialist will collaborate with families, public agencies, and private providers to deliver targeted prevention, intervention, and postvention services.

This role demands a proactive approach to compliance with relevant laws and regulations, maintaining detailed and accurate documentation.

Additionally, the specialist will work closely with schools, departments, and county resources to prioritize service delivery and implement effective interventions and educational programs.

A significant aspect of this role is the creation and delivery of professional development for PCOM staff and networking with external departments and agencies to leverage additional community support services.

The specialist will also oversee the implementation of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) programs, ensuring alignment with the organization’s goals and the needs of the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Development & Implementation : Create, execute, and monitor substance abuse prevention programs tailored to LGBTQ / SGL communities, with a focus on African American populations.
  • Prevention & Intervention Services : Provide specialized substance use prevention, intervention, and postvention services to students and families.
  • Collaboration : Work with families, public agencies, and private providers to address behavioral, mental, and physical health needs.
  • Compliance & Documentation : Maintain thorough documentation and ensure all programs comply with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Education & Training : Design and deliver educational programs that support the community's overall health and well-being.
  • Professional Development : Lead targeted training initiatives for PCOM staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Networking : Build relationships with external departments and agencies to access additional community support services.
  • Program Management : Oversee and manage the implementation of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) programs, ensuring they align with PCOM’s mission.

Qualifications

Required :

  • Master’s degree in behavioral health, psychology, social work, nursing, counseling, or a related field.
  • At least three (3) years of clinical experience as a behavioral health professional or substance abuse treatment practitioner, particularly working with youth and families.
  • Licensure or eligibility to obtain a license within two years from the Maryland Department of Education or licensure in Virginia as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner, or Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Extensive knowledge of behavioral health service principles, assessment processes, and evidence-based treatment methods.
  • Familiarity with public and private agencies and community resources.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage teams and oversee program implementation.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly in working with diverse sexual and gender minority populations.

Preferred :

  • Licensure or certification as a substance abuse counselor.
  • Experience in implementing and managing Substance Use Disorder (SUD) programs.
