Job Summary
The Occupational Therapist evaluates, plans and providesoccupational therapy treatment programs for patients whose injuryor disease interferes with daily functioning.
Provide skilledintervention using varieties of techniques that are appropriate toachieve identified goals, restore function or prevent disability.
This position may work in an inpatient, outpatient or home caresetting.
Core JobResponsibilities
- Performs appropriateassessments on all patients (neonate, pediatric, adolescent,geriatric patients and general patient population) in accordancewith patient diagnosis and physicianorders.
- Establishes long and short term goalsand a plan of care in collaboration with patient / family / caregiver.
- Implements treatment to patientaccording to established individualized program plan.
- Uses various occupational therapy proceduresand techniques to produce changes in the condition that areconsistent with the diagnosis andprognosis.
- Observes and evaluates treatmenteffect, and updates the plan of care as needed.
- Formulates a discharge or follow-up plans toinclude continuation or discontinuation of O.T. services,implementation of home programs, recommendations foradaptations / equipment in patient's home environment, and communityresources in collaboration with patient, family, caregivers andstaff.
- Implements an education plan based uponlearning needs and evaluates for effectiveness. Includes family inteaching.
- Provides positive supportivecommunication to enhance patients' morale andself-esteem.
- Evaluates and makesrecommendations regarding adaptive equipment for patients (i.e. : wheelchairs, bathroom equipment, ADL devices, etc.
Designs,fabricates, and applies orthotic devices in accordance withpatients' diagnosis and physician's orders. Instructs patientand / or family in the application, care and precautions of orthosisand equipment.
- Attends patient case conferencesor discharge planning meetings, obtaining and reporting pertinentinformation regarding patient's present level of functioning, andfuture goals / plans.
- Consults and collaborateswith interdisciplinary team when needed. Makes appropriatereferrals to other practitioners.
- May conductpatient home evaluations via actual visits, gather informationregarding home, or simulate with patient / family, and makerecommendations for changes or equipment to promote patients'highest level of functioning within the home.
- Ensures all documentation and reports arecomplete, accurate and timely. Submits all patient chargespromptly.
- Communicates patient or problemissues appropriately to supervisor, physician, family and staff.
- Anticipates adverse outcomes or medicalchanges and communicates with referral source and / or appropriatestaff.
- Performs all aspects of care in a mannerthat optimizes patient and therapist safety and reduces thelikelihood of medical / health care errors.
- Keepscurrent in trends and best practices in occupational therapytreatment techniques, modalities, equipment, and exercise programs.
- Complies with all regulations, professionalstandards and MVHS policies.
- Assists withorientation of new staff members. Provides clinical supervision toCOTA and OT students.
- Maintains a positive andcollaborative working relationship both within the department andwith other departments.
- Actively participatesin departmental performance improvement / Continuous QualityImprovement (CQI) activities.
- Provides clinicalsupervision and direction to Certified Occupational TherapistAssistants, students, Rehab Aides, support staff as assigned.
- Performs related duties asassigned.
Education / Experience Requirements
REQUIRED :
- Bachelor of Scienceor Master's Degree in OccupationalTherapy.
- Ability to travel to other worksiteswithin the region.
Licensure / Certification Requirements
REQUIRED :
- NYS license as anOccupational Therapist.
- Current BLSCertification.
