POSITION SUMMARY
The Registered Dietitian (RD) is part of a multi-disciplinary team working to establish and deliver services that enhance the health and well-being of the AI / AN community within the Los Angeles metropolitan region.
The Registered Dietitian is responsible for coordinating health and nutrition education in a community- focused healthcare setting.
The Registered Dietitian provides education and assists in the development and delivery of health promotion and disease prevention programs with an emphasis on diabetes prevention, risk reduction and maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide nutrition assessment and counseling services to patients including : assessment of patients’ nutrition status, development of care plans and provision of Medical Nutrition Therapy.
- Provide nutrition education for the purpose of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of diabetes.
- Conduct individual and / or group health education sessions to develop, coordinate, and implement a follow-up plan to monitor behavior modification.
- Provide secure transfer of information as necessary to team members, ancillary site physicians, dentists, case workers and other UAII employees to expedite patient care and services.
- Manage incoming referrals for nutrition and diabetes services.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all encounters utilizing ICD-10 codes and CPT codes for data management systems.
- Provide diabetic case management to identified clients and assist providers with insulin instruction and titration.
- Coordinate the retinal photography program.
- Identify individual and community health education needs.
- Manage grants and contracts related to program area, including budget management, and deliverables.
- Adhere to performance indicators related to the delivery of services (i.e., GPRA, Key Performance Indicators, program goals and objectives).
- Provide support for administrative functions required by contract for Indian Health Service (IHS) and other funding sources including documentation, coordination, evaluation, and reporting components.
- Develop, coordinate and implement outreach and activity components of Indian Health Service (IHS) programs and other funding sources for diabetes, nutrition, and other health-related topics.
- Coordinate activities with identified community partners and internal programs and departments.
- Develop and coordinate health education materials available as resources for UAII staff and patients.
- Responsible for supporting and / or providing active feedback on program goals and plan enhancements to improve community health outcomes.
- Keep the Healthcare Clinical Operations Director well informed regarding activities, pending issues, and potential problems.
- Attend required departmental and agency meetings as requested.
- Other job-related duties as assigned or required to fulfill the purpose of the position.

Education &
Experience :
- Bachelors’ degree in dietetics and related disciplines from an accredited college or university
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in health education
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a community clinic setting
- Adept at motivational interviewing and behavior change counseling
Certifications :
- Current California CDR Registration
- CDE Designation (or needs to be willing to get it within a year)
Confidentiality :
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client and personnel information adhering to HIPAA, professional codes of conduct, State of CA regulations, Privacy Act, and UAII policies and procedures
- This position has access to sensitive information, and a breach in confidentiality will be grounds for disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination
Communication / Interpersonal Skills :
- Communicate and deal effectively with people in a professional and courteous manner verbally and in writing
- Proficient in English
- Demonstrable ability to lead workshops in a public forum
- Provide care in a culturally competent and sensitive manner for the American Indian / Alaska Native and underserved populations
Technology Skills :
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Working knowledge of virtual video platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams)

- Available and willing to travel as needed
- Available to work evening and weekend hours as needed
- Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training sessions relevant to the position
- Maintains personal responsibility for maintaining a valid licensure and for ensuring timely completion of appropriate Continuing Education Units for renewal of license
POSITION PREFERENCES
- Master’s degree in dietetics and related disciplines from an accredited college or university
- Experience working with the American Indian / Alaskan Native community
- Knowledge of Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Public Law 93-638)
- Experience working with nonprofit organizations, community groups, and performance-based government contracts
