Job Title : Heavy Equipment Operator
This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in the repair and maintenance of water and sewer utilities.
Major Duties
- Operates heavy equipment, including a backhoe, in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer system infrastructure.
- Loads and unloads materials for work projects.
- Excavates underground utilities.
- Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Establishes safe work zones; installs cones and traffic control devices.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures, including safety rules and regulations.Knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and operation procedures.Knowledge of utility system construction materials, principles, tools and practices.Skill in the operation of a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment.Skill in the use of assigned tools.Skill in oral and written communication.Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language.Minimum Qualifications
Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.Must have at least one (1) year of related experience.Supplemental Information
Complexity / Scope of Work
The work consists of related heavy equipment operation duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in support of department operations. Success in this position contributes to well-maintained utility infrastructure.Physical Demands / Work Environment

Texas DOT Physical exam is required.Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this job.
