Pay Range

$31.33 - $38.03 Hourly

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.

Job Description

We’re looking a Gardener II / Tree Climber . You will be involved in all aspects of pruning, removals, and other concepts related to tree care and will help to maintain LLNL’s landscape.

This position is in the Facilities Services Division of the Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Department. This position may require work at Site 300 in Tracy, California.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

  • Perform all aspects of tree pruning / thinning / removing dead wood throughout the tree canopy; and clearing, chipping, and removal of tree debris.
  • Practice industry pruning guidelines; have a basic understanding of tree growth; properly identify basic trees and shrubs.
  • Prepare, operate, and maintain all tools, equipment (i.e., chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, power hand tools, etc.), and climbing gear.
  • Utilize approved knots and practice proper rigging and climbing techniques and procedures.
  • Perform site-wide landscaping and grounds maintenance; mowing, edging, trimming; and installing and maintaining landscaping surfaces;

assist in the removal of hazardous trees.

  • Prepare standard reports and additional reports for vehicle inspections and deficiency forms.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with safety regulations and procedures, fulfilling all integrated safety, security, and property management responsibilities.
  • Provide good customer service and effectively communicate with all levels of personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience; valid California’s driver’s license.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities performing shrub and tree pruning, mowing, and trimming.
  • Experience with tree care safety standards and basic knowledge and ability to apply general safety policies and procedures.
  • Experience operating standard equipment and tools for gardener tasks such as wood-chippers, aerial platform equipment, tractors, and motor vehicles.
  • Experience utilizing specialized equipment for climbing (ropes, saddles,) along with associated tools.
  • Experience performing high-tree pruning, tree removal, and stump grinding.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully follow directions and complete requests; customer service and communication skills and the ability to work independently or as a team member interacting well with others.
  • Basic computer skills necessary to complete timekeeping, web-based training, and service requests.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with high tree removal greater than 15 ft.
  • Experience in making independent decisions and providing safety training.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration.

Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis ).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.

Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Davis Bacon Act

The Laboratory performs a variety of work, including some that may fall under Davis Bacon Act requirements. When work scope falls under this Act, the Laboratory complies with the prevailing wage requirements.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

External applicant(s) selected for this position must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Wireless and Medical Devices

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and / or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas.

Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and / or laboratory mobile device in your possession.

This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth / wireless enabled devices.

If you use a medical device, which pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the rules concerning the mobile device in individual sections within Limited Areas.

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities require separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capabilities or wireless that has been disabled are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit / Buffer Space within buildings.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam

A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
