Position Summary

At NRAO we are seeking an Electronics Engineer or Computer Scientist to join the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) project for a one-year appointment.

The ngVLA project is a transformational radio telescope array that will have more than 200 radio telescope antennas throughout North America.

The project recently received a strong endorsement from the National Academy of Sciences Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey (Astro2020).

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing FPGA System-on-Chip firmware and software implementing real-timedigitalsignal processing on science data streams for ngVLA.

The preferred location for the position will be in Charlottesville, VA; Socorro, NM; or Albuquerque, NM. A domestic remote work arrangement might also be possible.

What You Will be Doing :

  • Joining ngVLAsDigitalBackEnd design team and developing HDL-based FPGA firmware.
  • Developing FPGA hierarchical System on-chip designs that focus on complex system requirements.
  • Taking responsibility for prototype testing in the laboratory and at ngVLA antenna sites as well as providing support to the implementation team during production and deployment of the system.

Who You Are :

  • You have a Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
  • You have three to five years experience and / or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • You have detailed Understanding of FPGA Design Flow.
  • You have an understanding of FPGA Block-Level and Full-Chip Design.
  • While not required, you may have :
  • 5 years or more of experience writing VHDL or Verilog for large scale Xilinx and / or Intel FPGAs.
  • Embedded Linux software design experience in C / C++ / Python.

Competency Summary

  • High level of competency in performing VHDL or Verilog based FPGA firmware
  • Experience implementing real-timedigitalsignal processing on science data streams for our state-of-the-art radio telescope array
  • Experience in block-level and full-chip architecture is preferred
  • Attention to detail is critical

  • Excellent communication skills

Compensation

This is an open rank position, for a level III or IV Engineering position. For open rank positions, the starting salary range for each is the following :

  • Engineer III ($78,806) ($120,837)
  • Engineer IV ($90,015) ($138,024)

Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include; education, experience, skills, competencies, other qualifications of the successful candidate, as well as internal equity and labor market conditions.

AUIs benefits package addresses the needs of employees and their families with most benefits beginning on the first day of employment.

AUI provides excellent paid time off (13 holidays, annual accrual of up to 24 vacation days and 15 sick days, additional time off for doctor / dentist visits, and 8 weeks of paid parental leave).

Medical, dental and vision plans are effective on the first day of employment. AUIs retirement benefit contributes an amount equal to 10 percent of a qualified participants base pay with no required employee contribution;

we also offer an optional supplemental, tax-deferred plan for employee retirement contributions.
