Student Health and Well-Being Mental Health Services (SHWB-MHS) at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic, organized, and motivated Senior Associate Director of Clinical Services to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the well-being of a diverse community of learners.

Reporting to the Director of Clinical Services, the Senior Associate Director is a key member of the newly expanded and restructured MHS leadership team.

The Senior Associate Director of Clinical Services leads the day-to-day operations of the Homewood clinic. Directly supervising the clinical operations, this position collaborates closely with members of the MHS leadership team to ensure that clinical service delivery across the organization and all locations runs smoothly and centers the provision of equitable, culturally responsive care.

With direct supervision of a team of clinicians from a range of disciplines (social workers, psychologists, and licensed professional counselors), the Senior Associate Director is also responsible for the scheduling and allocation of initial consultation and intake appointments, referral workflows to psychiatric care, clinic workflows, quality customer service, and the overall operations.

The unique nature of the MHS organizational and service structure requires substantial collaboration with the direct supervisors of other clinical staff across the portfolio to ensure that staff receive multi-dimensional supervision and feedback, as well as support for their professional growth.

Additionally, the Senior Associate Director of Clinical Services will actively model and facilitate teamwork, staff engagement, and commitment to the mission and goals of Mental Health Services and the Student Health and Well-Being division.

The Senior Associate Director of Clinical Services will serve as the primary consultant to MHS clinicians and front office staff on all matters related to clinic operations.

The incumbent will represent the Homewood clinic on relevant committees within MHS and liaise with divisional student affairs and support offices.

The successful candidate will be a skilled practitioner, have excellent organizational and leadership skills, and a keen understanding of clinical service delivery models, data management, and reporting.

The service model will incorporate a range of visit types including initial consultations, goal-oriented individual therapy, group programs, single-session counseling, and intensive services for individuals who may be stepping down from or at risk of entering higher levels of care.

This position also shares responsibility with other MHS leadership team members for involvement in the medical leave of absence process.

The Senior Associate Director of Clinical Services will actively lead and contribute to data management and reporting, clinical policy and procedure development, assessment of outcomes, and quality improvement initiatives.

The incumbent will collaborate closely with the team of Associate Directors across the practice, the Mental Health Services senior leadership team, and the front office staff for the Homewood location.

This position will be primarily based at the Homewood campus. Flexible hours are required at key times in the academic year (e.

g. orientation and special events) including evenings and weekends. The Senior Associate Director of Clinical Services will be a member of the MHS leadership team call schedule, which provides consultative support to the JHU Behavioral Health Crisis Support Team and contracted on-call services.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

This position's direct clinical service and supervisory responsibilities will be primarily based at the Homewood clinic but may provide virtual or in-person services at other clinic locations depending on demand and specialty.

Supervision and Administrative Duties (70%)

  • Leads the clinical operations of the Homewood clinic.
  • Advises front office staff and clinicians on clinical decision-making, scheduling conflicts, coverage, customer service, and coordination with BHCST for facilitation of hospitalization.
  • Leads and participates in multi-disciplinary clinical and administrative teams including clinic staff meetings, case consultation, high-risk case management, peer chart reviews, medical leave review, accreditation, and other committees as directed.
  • Collaborates closely with other members of the MHS leadership team who supervise clinical staff at the Homewood clinic to ensure consistent expectations, clinic flow, and equitable distribution of duties.
  • Serves as super user for the Electronic Health Record system (Point and Click), providing support to other staff as well as managing scheduling workflows and templates, staff schedule templates, and developing performance targets for therapists.
  • Actively leads and contributes to the development of clinical policies, procedures, and other written materials to support effective clinic operations.
  • Produces and contributes to reports, needs assessments, quality improvement processes, and evaluations of clinical services.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Training and Professional Development, develops and facilitates onboarding and training plans for Homewood clinical staff;

contributes to the training of staff at other locations as appropriate.

Effectively manages direct reports, including goal setting, performance evaluations, performance management, and related HR processes;

works collaboratively with leadership team members to provide multi-dimensional supervision to all therapists.

  • Leads clinical provider searches and participates in MHS-wide recruitment and hiring processes.
  • Leads and contributes to staff development, engagement, and team-building activities for Homewood staff as well as larger MHS-wide events.

Direct Clinical Service (approximately 15%, based on demand and clinic needs)

  • Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic, and professional goals.
  • When clinic demand is high, provides culturally responsive direct clinical services, including goal-oriented approaches to initial consultations, intake assessments, single-session therapy, individual counseling, group and relationship counseling, and crisis intervention for a diverse community of learners.
  • Utilizes both flexible and goal-oriented approaches to individual treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy, often in collaboration with treating psychiatrists.
  • Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Consults, as appropriate, with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.

Collaborative and Other Activities (15%)

  • Serves as primary liaison to primary care, relevant CARE teams for the Homewood campus, and others as requested or assigned.
  • Participates in outreach and educational activities including resource fairs, community meetings, and training for JHU faculty, staff, and students.
  • Participates in training programs and professional development of staff through the provision of didactic training, consultation, and seminars.
  • Provides clinical supervision to trainees; psychologist candidates will be part of the APA-approved doctoral internship clinical supervision pool.
  • Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidence-based interventions.
  • Actively contributes to MHS leadership team activities and clinical services strategic planning.
  • Participates in MHS leadership team call rotation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of priorities and concerns specific to students and learners who identify as first generation, limited income, LGBTQ+, and as members of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.
  • Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.

Additional Information (Working Conditions)

  • This is a 37.5-hour / week position.
  • This position requires evening and weekend work dependent on the programmatic needs of the University and for activities during the academic year (e.

g., orientation, special events, etc.)

  • One day of remote work is standard; additional remote days may be required or permitted based on operational needs.
  • This position is designated as a Required Attendance Employee, designated as vital to the operation of a workgroup, so may be required to work during a university closure in response to operational needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, or social work from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 8 years of post-graduate clinical experience.
  • Minimum of 6 years of post-licensure clinical experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical supervisory experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a supervisory role responsible for the management and evaluation of employees.
  • Licensed as a mental health provider in the required jurisdiction(s) noted in the job description (psychologist, LMFT, LCPC, LCSW-C) or license-eligible (licensed as a mental health provider in another jurisdiction, must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree (DSW, Ph.D., Psy.D. or relevant terminal degree) from an accredited program is strongly preferred.
  • Licensed as a psychologist in required jurisdiction(s) noted in job description or license-eligible (must obtain licensure in required jurisdiction(s) within 6 months of hire).
  • Clinical experience in a university setting strongly preferred.
