Position Summary

The Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations and organizational structures, while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals.

The Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities is responsible for acting on behalf of the University President regarding all aspects of student disciplinary conduct.

The Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities receives reports of alleged misconduct relative to Title 5, California Code of Regulations, investigates all complaints in order to determine whether University student conduct action is to be pursued, and determines appropriate University student conduct case dispositions and restorative sanctions under the guidelines of California State University Executive Orders (EO).

Reporting directly to the Director of the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Associate Director of the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities assists in the management of the Center and the responsibility of acting on behalf of the University regarding all aspects of student conduct.

The Associate Director will receive and investigate reports of alleged academic and non-academic misconduct filed by faculty, staff, students, University Police, Residential Education, and members of the community, and will represent the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities or University as appropriate.

The Associate Director will supervise Student Conduct Coordinators and may supervise Graduate Assistants.

The Associate Director of the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities will work closely with campus departments / divisions to support compliance with all University policy and external regulations that directly impact students.

The position requires a working knowledge of internal and California State University policies that affect students. If University student conduct action is to be pursued, the Associate Director of the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities will follow system-wide procedural guidelines established by the California State University Chancellor's Office (currently, Executive Order 1098).

The Associate Director will be a highly skilled communicator with strong conflict-mediation skills. They will be a relational leader with the ability to develop and maintain positive and compassionate working relationships with students, parents, faculty, employees, law enforcement, and other university constituents.

They understand the philosophy of student conduct, including the purpose of early intervention, the need to create a safe and productive living / learning environment, and the overall goal to retain our students whenever possible.

They are a dynamic communication with the ability to navigate difficult and sensitive topics and assist in the creation of policies and procedures related to student conduct.

They will act in an unbiased, compassionate yet unemotional, firm, persuasive, and / or comforting manner, as appropriate.

The Associate Director will be a team player in matters related to facilitating professional development, office dynamics, and necessary tasks.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 4 : 30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education, student development, or a related field
  • Five (5) years of direct experience with student conduct and restorative sanctioning
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in legal and ethical student disciplinary practices

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience applying state and federal laws and CSU Executive Orders affecting student conduct work and concurrent risk management issues in California State Universities.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations as they pertain to judicial actions, including FERPA, CIPA, Title V, and Executive Orders.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus.

An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work.

Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
