Who we’re looking for
Toyota’s Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs group seeks a passionate and highly motivated Senior Program Manager Environmental Regulations to work in our newly named and remodeled North American Hydrogen Headquarters (H2HQ) in southern California.
The primary responsibility of this role is to represent Toyota’s interests in regulatory and policy matters within California and the US states that follow California’s regulations.
You will accomplish this through your exceptional ability to describe Toyota’s interests, excellent understanding of California’s priorities, and leveraging your established relationships with regulators, relevant NGOs, think tanks, other OEMs, and trade associations.
Reporting to the General Manager of Environmental Regulation, the person in this role will support the Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs group's objective to assess emerging regulatory and policy trends that impact Toyota’s business, educate regulators and critical stakeholders on Toyota’s product environmental strategy, and ultimately seek to align regulations and policy with Toyota’s objective of providing safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible vehicles for its customers.
What you’ll be doing
Influence California’s environmental regulations and policies related to vehicle greenhouse gas emissions, zero-emission vehicles, low-carbon fuels, and other areas to ensure the long-term success of Toyota’s technology and business strategy.
Accomplish this through deep technical knowledge of automotive emission regulations and extensive experience.
Liaise with the automotive industry, trade associations, and broader California environmental stakeholders and influence their positions on critical environmental regulations and policies to account for Toyota’s interests, technology, and business strategy.
Accomplish this through your established relationships with senior staff and executives in other OEMs, relevant NGOs, think tanks, and trade associations.
Impact Toyota’s internal decisions on product planning, advanced product development, compliance, communications, legal matters, and other areas to support and advance Toyota’s long-term technology and business strategy in California.
Accomplish this by artfully advocating a regulatory affairs perspective with Toyota teams in the US and Japan, developing consensus, and influencing outcomes.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies, utilities, and energy companies involved in electric vehicle adoption and grid management in California and influence their perspective to account for Toyota’s technology and business strategy.
- Mentor and develop staff in federal and state vehicle environmental regulations, manage the day-to-day workload of some staff, and support and advise global Toyota affiliates that tend to follow US vehicle environmental regulations in understanding regulatory complexities.
This will be a minor component of the role.
What you bring
- Undergraduate degree in an engineering or STEM discipline.
- Significant experience influencing environmental regulations impacting the automotive industry.
- Fifteen (15) years or more of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively articulate complex topics in a simple form for influence and impact.
Added bonus if you have
- Master’s degree or above in an engineering or STEM discipline
- Significant regulatory affairs experience directly relevant to the automotive sector, such as former employment with an OEM, trade association, Tier-1 supplier, or regulator.
- Established relationships and networks within the automotive industry, such as with other OEMs, trade associations, and career regulators.

The annual base salary range for this position is $180,900.00 - $293,900.00
