Position Summary :
The Coordinator of Environmental Health & Safety works independently, performing a full range of operations and administrative tasks towards the environmental and occupational regulatory compliance at the Waterbury and Danbury campuses.
These tasks include administering safety programs; training employees on topics such as bloodborne pathogens and hazard communication;
safe storage of chemicals, maintaining inventories of chemicals and safety supplies, collection, storage and disposal of waste chemicals, stringent recordkeeping, and inspections of safety equipment as required by regulatory agencies.
The position serves as a resource to science faculty, laboratory staff, and maintenance staff to ensure regulatory compliance.
Example of Job Duties :
Under the direction of the Campus Dean of Administration, Operations, and Facilities or other administrator, the Coordinator of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for an array of services that promote a healthy and safe environment and serves as a campus resource for compliance with environmental and occupational regulations through effective performance in these essential duties :
- Regulatory compliance for chemical use in the workplace.
- Maintain safety data sheets and chemical inventory.
- Train faculty and staff on various health and safety topics.
- Manage waste streams according to established protocols.
- Schedule and administer various waste pickups.
- Conduct inspections to promote safety and meet compliance requirements.
- Purchase safety supplies and equipment within a given budget.
- Track spending.
- Chairs safety committee.

Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or an appropriately related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.
Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following :
- Knowledge of state and federal OSHA regulations.
- Knowledge of state and federal EPA regulations.
- Two (2) years’ experience in health & safety compliance in a laboratory or industrial setting.
Candidates must possess proven ability to effectively work with culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and students.
They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.).
Preferred Qualifications :
- Proficient in MS Office suite including Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- CPR / AED / Narcan certification.
- Experience creating training materials.
Salary : $39.44 hourly.
