POSITION DESCRIPTION : Assistant / Associate / Full Professor, Tenure Stream, Full-Time (9-month) faculty member in Communication Science and Disorders in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.

CONTENT AREA : Applicants focusing on hearing science, auditory neuroscience, or a related field and pediatric populations are preferred.

STARTING DATE : January 1, 2025 or later

RESEARCH FOCUS : Development of a systematic research program in their area of expertise. The preferred candidate will have expertise in hearing science, auditory neuroscience, or a related field focusing on pediatric populations.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an extramurally funded research program in their area of expertise.

Ideally, the successful candidate will complement one of our existing research clusters, which include :

  • The Brain and Auditory Sciences Research Initiative (BASRI), including six principal investigators
  • The Pediatric Auditory, Speech, and Language Initiative (PALS), including two principal investigators
  • The Research Enterprise in Voice and Swallowing (REVS), including five principal investigators
  • The Pittsburgh Translational Aphasia Research Initiative (PTARI), including five principal investigators

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

1. Engage in projects that seek to advance outcomes associated with pediatric hearing science, hearing disorders, or a related field.

2. Lead an extramurally funded research program in their area of research expertise and provide students with access to high-quality research training experiences in their laboratory.

3. Leverage collaborative relationships with clinical partners within a vibrant healthcare community that includes the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP), and the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Center at the University of Pittsburgh.

4. Engage in didactic, seminar, and clinical teaching and mentoring of students (teaching assignments may vary depending on salary support from funded research).

5. Direct student research within areas of expertise at all curriculum levels (e.g., Undergraduate Honors Theses, Doctor of Audiology (AuD), and PhD research experiences).

6. Participate in departmental, school, university, and professional service.

7. Demonstrate successful experience and a strong motivation for excellence and innovation in classroom, clinical, and laboratory instruction and teaching.

8. Demonstrate high potential for or evidence of successful academic collaboration and a strong motivation for such cooperation and building and maintaining excellence in scholarly research and teaching in a research-intensive department, school, and university.

COLLABORATION EXPECTATIONS : The University of Pittsburgh offers exciting opportunities for research collaborations across several departments, centers, programs, and Universities.

This includes the Department of BioEngineering, the Department of Otolaryngology, the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Center for Neural Basis of Cognition, a joint venture between the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain school, university, and community collaborations with other departments as well as UPMC, CHP, and / or LEND Center to advance research and clinical outcomes in their area of scholarship, locally, regionally, and nationally.

These collaborations are expected to include audiologists, speech-language pathologists, physicians, occupational and / or physical therapists, rehabilitation science and technology engineers, other health services researchers, and educators.

The tenure home will be in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders. Competitive candidates may also be offered secondary appointments in other collaborating units.

QUALIFICATIONS : A doctoral degree in Communication Science and Disorders and / or related fields with demonstrated expertise in specified subject areas.

Priority will be given to candidates whose scholarship and discovery will contribute to advancing pediatric hearing and hearing disorders.

While no candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will demonstrate many of the following professional and personal qualifications :

1. Evidence of collaboration and successful partnerships in hearing science, auditory neuroscience, or related areas focusing on pediatric populations.

2. Evidence of research and scholarship and the potential to secure extramural funding.

3. Experience with pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training.

4. Ability to mentor students to achieve personal, departmental, school, and university goals.

5. Familiarity with and experience with diverse funding sources, including federal and non-federal sources, private foundations, industry, training grants, and private-public partnerships.

The Department of Communication Science and Disorders

CSD is one of nine departments in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS). CSD offers BA, MA, MS, AuD, and PhD degrees.

We are a vibrant department with innovative research, teaching, and clinical education opportunities for faculty and students.

We have experienced significant growth over the past four years, including hiring a new department chair, four new program directors, nine new faculty, and multiple staff positions.

The department now employs 24 full-time faculty and 19 full-time staff. Four collaborative research initiatives, the Brain and Auditory Sciences Research Initiative (BASRI), the Pediatric Auditory, Language and Speech Initiative, the Research Enterprise in Voice and Swallowing (REVS), and the Pittsburgh Translational Aphasia Research Initiative (PTARI) house sixteen research labs with over $15M in external research awards (NIH, NSF, PCORI, NIDILRR, DARPA, and non-federal agencies).
