Organization Overview

Breaktime (www.breaktime.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit working to break the cycle of Young Adult homelessness by equipping young adults with the job and financial security they need to establish housing security.

Roles and Responsibilities

Breakdown of Responsibilities :

Individual Giving (primarily Major Gifts) : 80%

Institutional Giving and Development Operations : 20%

Overview :

Breaktime is seeking a dynamic and visionary Vice President of Development to lead and own our major gifts fundraising efforts while overseeing and supporting our Senior Director of Institutional Giving in their leadership of the Institutional Giving and Development Operations functions.

This important work will secure the resources necessary to help Breaktime break the cycle of young adult homelessness. This key role will require a strategic, effective fundraiser with a proven track record of success in cultivating and stewarding major donors and significant exposure to or experience in other areas of development.

We are looking for someone incredibly passionate about fundraising and eager and excited to be in an external-facing role, interfacing with donors, networking at events, etc.

Our ideal candidate has experience working at an organization that raises $10m+ per year and is ready to transition into a fast-paced, rapidly growing organization.

The Vice President of Development will :

Drive fundraising growth : Double our annual operating revenue from $6 million to $12 million over the next five years .

Provide strategic leadership : Oversee and support the Senior Director of Institutional Giving in increasing fundraising from foundations, corporations, and government agencies and strengthening our Development Operations function (including data administration and prospect research).

Be a passionate advocate : Attend fundraising events and other engagements to galvanize resources for an important cause and build lasting relationships.

Cultivate a culture of generosity and development : Create a positive and impactful environment that fosters philanthropy, community engagement, and skill development.

Responsibilities : Donor Engagement :

Donor Engagement :

Identify, cultivate, and steward relationships with major donors, and support the Executive Director in managing their donor relationships.

Develop personalized cultivation and stewardship plans for major donors.

Ensure timely and effective communication with donors and supporters.

Oversee and support the Senior Director of Institutional Giving in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding foundation / corporate grants and government grants / contracts.

Strategic Leadership :

Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to achieve annual revenue goals, including doubling annual revenue over the next five years.

Partner with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving to refine and execute a strategy to double Breaktime’s giving from foundations and corporations while increasing government grants / contracts to 33% of our revenue mix.

Oversee the Engagement Manager in the planning and executing of fundraising events, campaigns, and initiatives.

Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board of Directors on development strategy and resource allocation.

Help develop a fundraising culture among Breaktime’s staff, Board, Advisory Council, Young Professionals Advisory Council, and broader community.

Team Management :

Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing Development team.

Set clear performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback and support.

Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team culture.

Communications and Marketing :

Collaborate with the Communications team to develop compelling messaging and materials to support fundraising efforts.

Work with the Communications Team to leverage digital and social media platforms to engage donors and promote the organization's impact.

Financial Management :

Develop and manage the Development department's budget.

Track and analyze fundraising performance metrics through a portfolio-based system.

Prepare regular reports on fundraising progress and results for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, Leadership Team, and other key stakeholders.

Project annual revenue from individuals and institutions, and adapt these projections throughout the course of the year based on budget v. actual reports.

Help ensure the reconciliation of our Quickbooks and Salesforce systems by working with the Senior Director of Operations and Finance and the Senior Director of Institutional Giving.

Travel and Representation :

Represent Breaktime at external events, conferences, and meetings, cultivating relationships and promoting the mission.

Travel as needed (up to 60% of the time) to meet with donors, attend fundraising events, and participate in professional development opportunities throughout the Greater Boston area with occasional interstate travel.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Reports to : Executive Director

Supervises : Up to 4 direct reports, including the Senior Director of Institutional Giving and Engagement Manager

Job Requirements

Education :

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Communications, Nonprofit Management, Philanthropic Studies, or a related field.

Relevant experience in lieu of a degree is always considered.

Experience :

Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in non-profit fundraising and development, with a proven track record of success in securing major gifts from individuals and family foundations.

Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies.

Experience in managing and motivating members of a Development team.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Additional Requirements :

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Preferred) Individual should have familiarity with database and information architecture, ideally with Salesforce.

Preferred) Strong financial acumen and budgeting skills.
