Overview of Position

We are seeking a dynamic, highly qualified instrumental music teacher to ignite a love of music for elementary school students.

The teacher in this position will be .4 FTE at various elementary schools (Hazel Wolf , Cedar Park, John Rogers, Viewlands).

This is a unique opportunity to build programs, grow strong relationships with students, and become part of a thriving music community in Seattle Public Schools.

The purpose of this itinerant position is to provide elementary instrumental music instruction to 4th and 5th grade students in Seattle Public Schools.

Responsibilities include : instruction in woodwinds, percussion, strings, and brass, coordination and supervision of concerts at each assigned school, evaluation of students' learning, attendance at team meetings, and ensuring students exiting the program in 5th grade are prepared for middle school band or orchestra.

Applicants must have evidence of strong teaching, classroom management and organizational skills. Teamwork and collaboration are essential, as are strong communictaion skills to build the program.

This is a part-time .4FTE position; therefore, salary will be 40% of what is listed in this posting to align with the FTE.

Essential Functions

1. Instruct students on basic instruments including the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone and, if time allows, viola, alto saxophone, and percussion.

2. Direct, supervise and coordinate student music performances; assemblies, concerts and other activities during the school day and / or in the evening.

3. Teach to required program expectations using approved curriculum.

4. Provide instruction, assistance, and support to individual students that will encourage participation in instrumental music.

5. Implement techniques for effecting positive student behavior.

6. Participate in both short- and long-term instructional planning.

7. Work cooperatively with other department members to evaluate program and to implement needed improvements.

8. Maintain student records including daily grades, attendance reports, and others as required.

9. Participate in peer and instructional coaching, staff meetings and collaborative team planning.

10. Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents or guardians and community.

11. Respond to parents' or guardians' concerns.

12. Enforce school rules and monitor student behavior in non-classroom settings.

13. Perform other tasks as developed by staff, Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction, and / or Visual & Performing Arts Manager.

OTHER FUNCTIONS :

Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.

Participate in a variety of activities to enhance personal and professional skills.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS :

Reports to the Visual and Performing Arts Manager.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Required to drive to various sites within the district's reach; required to transport moderately heavy materials and equipment for training and instruction;
  • required to attend occasional evening activities; required to deal with a wide range of student achievement and behavior;
  • required to remain flexible to meet students immediate needs; required to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize;
  • may experience frequent interruptions; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students;
  • in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions, to demonstrate techniques properly for student safety, or to conduct or direct students;
  • in some positions precautions may need to be taken to prevent or lesson exposure of self and / or students to various materials, fumes, equipment, cutting edges or hot surfaces;

may teach in a classroom without telephone communication.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES :

  • Knowledge of : Best practices in music instruction including program design and delivery; WA music essential academic learning requirements;
  • effective student behavior management; effective instructional techniques with instructional materials used by the district;

rules and procedures for student and adult safety.

  • Skill in : Instructing students in instrumental music; analyzing and interpreting student performance data; aligning instructional materials with State standards and grade level expectations;
  • appropriate use of a variety of instructional methods; adapting music materials and teaching techniques to increase achievement;
  • proficiency in reading, writing, and oral communications; effective communication with parents or guardians in a diverse community;

organizing and time management; decision-making and problem-solving; basic Microsoft Office software and Outlook.

  • Ability to : Deal with students in a positive and confident manner; be fair and consistent when working with culturally, racially, and economically diverse student populations;
  • adapt to change and remain flexible; organize activities; manage different student learning and behavioral styles and abilities;
  • use good judgment to maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques; address new trends and ideas in education and education transformation;
  • exercise self-discipline in behavior and attitude; work independently; work as a team-member; use necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools, or software;

direct assistants; in some positions, administer first aid and CPR; establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with students, parents or guardians, staff and administrators.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION :

Bachelor's degree in music education with an endorsement in instrumental music.

EXPERIENCE :

One (1) year of successful teaching experience, and the ability to demonstrate instructional-level proficiency on the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Valid Washington State certification with an instrumental music endorsement
  • Must meet No Child Left Behind requirements
  • Demonstrated successful instrumental music teaching experience
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality per district policy and state and federal laws
  • Washington state driver's license and vehicle
