Reporting to the Senior Director of Medical Services, this position supports HARP’s goals to decrease pet overpopulation.

The primary focus will be ensuring spay / neuter goals are met through the daily sterilization of all surgical patients.

The quality of patient care is first and foremost. The ideal candidate will be a person of integrity, loyalty, and who has the capacity for hard work, perseverance, and resiliency.

The position is supported by an experienced team of highly qualified technicians in surgery.

Our Purpose

HARP operates three facilities : two large shelters, both with full service Veterinary Medical Centers open to the public, and a Wildlife Center run by licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialists.

The shelters are both open door / managed admission and committed to providing the animals and people in the community with high-quality, low-cost wellness care and veterinary services.

Our East End location recently moved into a state-of-the-art facility that includes modern, low-stress housing for shelter animals, a full surgical suite, digital radiography, ultrasound, and a full in-house diagnostics lab.

HARP has a mobile clinic unit that now provides care at two free outside clinics per month, although we are looking to expand this service.

The mobile clinic provides veterinary care to housing-challenged individuals as well as housed low-income individuals.

The HARP medical team is also committed to mentorship, which includes a veterinary student extern program, in-house and off-site CE opportunities for our veterinary staff.

Principal Responsibilities :

Performs efficient and effective high-quality, high-volume spay / neuter for both client owned and HARP shelter animals.

These include dogs, cats, and rabbits.

  • Responsible for an average of 30-40 routine spay / neuter surgeries daily.
  • Examine animals, recommend post-op rechecks, as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.
  • Actively promote spay and neuter and educate clients on responsible animal ownership.
  • Actively support associate staff and volunteers and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.
  • Mentor and teach veterinary students and visiting veterinarians in the tenants of spay / neuter and shelter medicine.
  • When needed, perform minor surgeries for client owned and HARP shelter animals, such as dentals, amputations, enucleations, mass removals, etc.
  • When needed, examine, and develop treatment plans for shelter owned animals.
  • Records information pertaining to animal examinations and treatments in the patient’s record in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Advise and perform euthanasia when medically appropriate.
  • Desire to learn and adopt shelter medicine if no experience.
  • Provide recommendations for follow up care (this may consist only of referring client / patient to their regular veterinarian if an owned animal, and no valid VPCR).
  • Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by Veterinary Technicians.
  • Represent HARP in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • Provide quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.

Other Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide input and communicate any issues regarding the clinic’s disease control protocols, surgical protocols, or other medical issues at regular Veterinarian meetings or with the Senior Director of Medical Services.
  • Ensure staff members are adhering to proper peri-operative care of patients.
  • Communicate any issues concerning staff or patients with medical managers or the Senior Director of Medical Services.

Work Environment :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be exposed to hazards associated with aggressive animals. The employee will primarily be working in an office environment.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, listen, hear; use hands to finger, manipulate, handle, or feel;

reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift / or move up to a minimum of 50 pounds.

Additional Information :

  • Reliable transportation is a must.
  • Travel between both of HARP’s large domestic shelters.
  • Must be a self-guided individual requiring minimal supervision.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience :

  • Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the State of Pennsylvania.
  • Prefer a minimum of 2-5 years of proven veterinary and surgical experience in High Volume, High Quality (HVHQ) Spay / Neuter practice or shelter and success in working with a solid team (Open to teaching HVHQ Techniques).
  • Current license or ability to obtain DEA license.
  • Must thrive in a multi-tasking, fast paced and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to think strategically and deploy vision through change management.
  • Highly emotional intelligent leader.
  • A solid understanding of animal sheltering and animal welfare.
  • Collaborative team player with exemplary interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with shifting priorities and in an organization, which is highly visible in the community.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal working hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to continue education / training in emerging areas.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an enthusiastic commitment to working in a high functioning team.

  • Excellent social and interpersonal skills, able to operate with diplomacy, tact and empathy.
  • Ability to take initiative and work well in a deadline-oriented environment with persistence and follow-through to project completion.

  • Ability to work effectively under stress and adhere to tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of issues, concerns and challenges facing animal welfare organizations and HQHV Hospitals.
